Hi, can anyone help to identify a fault that my 997T suffers from occasionally on starting?

When starting the car I can sometimes turn the key in the ignition and simply receive a "click", all the lights come on but the starter motor doesn't turn. It sounds as though the click comes from the dash area. This usually happens a couple of times and then the car starts. Typically it occurs when the car is being started after a few days inactivity; the car is kept on a trickle charge all the time and the battery is new.

I asked the OPC to take a look at the car the last time it was in for servicing but they just said "no fault code found". My thoughts were that it could be related to a dodgy switch on the clutch pedal. Grateful if anyone has any ideas as to what it might be.

I have what sounds like the same problem on my 2007 997T. I have not yet sorted this problem but can rule out the clutch switch as if I fail to press the clutch and attempt to start the car a warning shows on the dash so this rules out the clutch switch. I suspect that the starter motor solenoid may be faulty and plan when time allows to take the starter motor off the car and replace the solenoid and see if this cures the fault. Also my car has no stored fault codes? My battery is new and kept in tip top condition with a stepped charger when not is use.

I had exactly the same with my 997t and it was indeed the starter motor at fault.

Thanks all. The car is still under warranty until May 2016 so I will ask the OPC to sort this out.

Mine did the same - starter motor was therefore replaced under warranty

Mine did it too. I thought at first it was the ground strap that connects the battery and alternator. It is exposed to the elements and the first cables were quite thin and lost conductivity quickly. Another common starter issue on 997's.
That said after all that it was indeed the starter motor and I must say after a new one was put in it sounded like a different car turning over on start. My car was out of warranty but an Indy put in a reconditioned Bosch MUCH cheaper than a new one.

You could of course just replace the faulty solenoid part of the starter motor , Bosch sell these as a separate service part CIRCA £45.
