Hi,

has anyone else had issues with the centre caps of 991 GTS centre lock wheels popping off after being on track? this happened to me today after coming in the pits at Brands. they actually pinged off as I watched and went about 2 meters away! I lost two before I realised.

Thanks

Not tracked my car, but I've had issues with the nuts going grey with corrosion having only ever washed the car myself with Porsche-supplied products. Not wishing to hijack the thread, but anyone else have this problem with the centre locks too?

the nuts on my GT3 are discoloured - milky tinge.
Was going to have a go at remedying this in the coming weekend

My 997 center lock nuts have no paint left on them at all! I spoke to my local Porsche indy as I was going to buy a new set and they said don't bother, the paint comes off no matter how carefully they remove/fit wheels.

If you think about it the amount of force on the nut to torque those up correctly will destroy any paint finish.

A friend has a new 991 Turbo S, about 5 months old now and they're pretty much stripped already.

just wondering how the factory manage to put them on without damaging them, whereas a dealer can't ?

the CL is anodised aluminium, it's not painted.

I have read somewhere that brushing with olive oil brings back the colour ...

Correct, my mistake. They did say adonised.

This isn't 991 specific - centre lock 997s have the same problem. The cause is that the O ring pressure seals them so if there is any moisture at all in there (even the tiniest bit, so if it was cold damp and humid the last time they were put on or if any water managed to seep past when someone jet washed it, that would do it) then the heat build up on track boils it, driving up the pressure and pops them off like a spud gun. They are supremely overpriced to replace too. If they are popping off in the pits it is heat soak and can mean that you have just come in without having had a chance to do a proper cool-down lap to bring everything down (such as on a track day when a red flag is thrown, which was the case the last time it happened to me). If they ping off while you are lapping it is just pressure from the heat build up on a hint of moisture in there.

There are 2 things that you can do to ensure that they never pop off on you. One is to drill the tiniest possible hole in them so that the pressure can release. The other is to take them off for your first hot run on the track since the wheels were last refitted/the car washed (i.e. so you heat them up and boil out anything that could cause a pressure build up) then pop them back on. The thing is - you don't really want dust and crud building up in the centre lock mechanism (which is why they have a seal in the first place), so always running without them perhaps isn't what you want to do.

Thanks for that. When I spoke to the dealer they said they had never come across it before. I will have another chat with them.

Water ingress can cause damage/corrosion - see pictures from my 997 centre lock. It was covered by warranty at the time, but be careful with the pressure washer eek
Good call!! Thanks Shaun.

Centre nuts on my GTS went basically white, even after washing with only Porsche products. Had them replaced under warranty. Happened again. The olive oil thing works. Not absolutely perfectly, but it works.

And, yeah, I've just been the guy squatting in the street applying Extra Virgin to his Porsche.

No problem with 991 Gt3 center locks, all paint intact, no discolouring, maybe Porsche have sorted the issue?

Would ceramic coating help protect the centre caps ?

I only use Gtechniq PH neutral cleaning products on my GT3

No snow foam either.

You get milky nuts from using acidic cleaning products. Those anodised nuts are lethal and If you have PCCB's, a light jet spray then sponge with PH neutral stuff is ample. No need for anything with cleaning chemicals.

I use ph neutral shampoo as well but was wondering whether I self apply some gtechniq ceramic coating (specifically for wheels) on the wheels and the centre wheel caps?

My car already has ppf on main impact areas and gtechiq ultra ceramic coating on the non-ppf bits. Just didn’t think about doing the wheels at the time

A little brush with olive oil at the end of the wash brings back the colour a bit like tyre dressing. It doesnt have to be extra virgin !!
