I am looking at getting into a 996, probably a post facelift, 100k miles, I do 15-20k / year so in 3-4 years it could easily have done 180k, I ran a 944t to 160k and a 968 (although not to the same mileage)so am aware of maintemnance costs, and have my eyes wide open regarding IMS and scoring.
My dilemma is if the car has already had a recent clutch would it be worth changing the IMS bearing as an insurance?

I am trying to limit my exposure to depreciation hence buying something with a few miles on it, my local indie is looking after a few cars which are on their way to 200k, if you had a crystal ball what is a 180k well maintained 996 likely to be worth (i'm assuming that general prices aren't going to go north like 964s have)?

Most Porsche places would have looked at the IMS when they change the clutch. Any way to check if that happened and what they saw?

I doubt a 180,000 mile 996 would be worth a lot to be honest (£5000 tops? Probably more as spare parts...), but then if you can get one cheaply now, you will have a had a lot of fun for not much loss overall.

In 911 terms, they are the best-value choice, I think. Not the worst to drive by a long way, either.

Id say a well maintained car with 180,000 miles would be worth &7500 £8500.

I think it would need to be priced at around £7k to stand a chance. I really think it would be very difficult to sell at anything above that.

In 3 yrs time, though I think you'll find that a well maintained 996 C2 manual will be increasingly sought after & at that age, mileage becomes less important than condition & provenance imho.

BUT a 996C2 in another 3 years is likely to have cost £10k in a rebuild for either IMS or bore score failure so it's swings and roundabouts. Maintenance or lack of have little to do with the lottery of the 996 C2 engine.

This 996 cd is on 125000 miles looks fantastic but would this mileage kill the resale value say in 5 years time if it was say 140000 miles.

Well I've budgeted to deal with the IMS, and man maths has found a formula for the 10k rebuild, if the worst was to happen I'm sure that the rebuild would add something to resale, obviously not 10k but maybe 3-4k, so the rebuild has only cost 6-7k!

'Likely' but just as 'unlikely'. smile
