Just looking to get some opinions on whether I should to start using a slightly thicker (when cold) oil like Mobil Super 3000 5w-40 instead of Mobil 1 0w-40 in my 3.6 gen 2 with 73.5 k miles...?

Have a look at Millers oils and their Nanodrive range in particular. I use that in my Alfa Gtv and it has greatly improved oil consumption as well as lowering temperature and increasing top end power and smoothness. Haven't tried it yet in my Porsche. I believe Hartech recommend this oil (maybe even require it for warranty) on their rebuilt engines. http://www.hartech.org/porsche_996_997_Boxster_eng... Have also found these guys very helpful for advice on oils: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

This ^. I use Millers Nanotech 5w/40 and my engine has only done 48K. It is recommended by Hartech (although they suggest 5w/50) and is said to help reduce the possibility of bore scoring, so good enough reason for me.

I thought you said high mileage... Mine has 171k and I have continued to use Mobil 1 without any issues. I can see the merit in using slightly thicker grades but I haven't had any ill affects, fingers crossed.

73.5K miles ain't high miles.

I've used 0w-40 in both my 2003 996 Turbo (now with almost 136K miles though still not 'high miles' as there's a 996 Turbo over here with over 400K miles and there was another with 575K miles) and my 2002 Boxster (now with 293K miles) with no problems. In recognition of the high ambient temperatures here though (106F last week) I switched to Mobil 1 5w-50 (not a typo for 15w-50!).

However, either engine with either oil is fine even on hot summer days.

In my Turbo last January on a road trip and I had the oil changed in the mid-west and the dealer used 0w-40. Mileage then was 130K miles. I drove the car 2K miles home and another 3K miles around here some days in some pretty high ambient temps and the engine was fine. Last oil service here I had the dealer use 5w-50 since as I mentioned above it gets hot here in the summer. 100F+ some days.

If you are concerned about the miles - and there is no reason to be -- run Mobil 1 5w-50. You get a bit thicker oil at low temperature -- though it is really not needed -- and the high temperature viscosity is up a bit, which could be beneficial provided it gets real warm where you live/drive.

Have to admit though that gong by the oil pressure gage on my 996 Turbo I really can't tell which oil is in the engine.

I do know that at around 5K miles with either oil the Turbo and Boxster engine generate a bit more clatter on cold engine start if the car sits unused for a few days. But since either car seldom sits unused for more than a few days and I change the oil every 5K miles this is no big deal.

Keep in mind though if it gets cold where you are 0w-40 should be used. I think Porsche specifies 0w-40 oil if temperatures drop to -25C.

I've been putting Mobil Super 3000 5w40 in the GT3 for a few years now and rate it following recommendations from trade/specialist contacts, but you can always do better and treat her to a 'proper' (ie Esther based) fully synthetic like Millars....trouble is it's twice the price and if you're only leaving it in there 6mths (even every 12) it will soon get expensive!

But what price an 'unscored' bore eh?! beer
