Electric cooling fan

Not knowledgeable on the mechanical side of things so can anyone suggest the possible malfunction was has caused the electric cooling fan on the offside of my 2010 Gen 2 Carrera 2S to come on? The water temperature is normal and the fan turns off when the engine is tuned off.

Grateful for any advice.
