Might be of interest to someone, this is coming up in my local classic car auction in two weeks time

http://angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auctions...

I haven't seen it yet but will hopefully see it during next week as I am looking at something else coming up there, obviously someone's track toy but looks good value to me, I paid a lot more than that for my 996 GT3 MK1 two months ago!

If anyone is interested I can PM an opinion once I have seen it if it helps.

Interesting front splitter extensions. I have been thinking doing something similar. Thanks for posting the link!

Blimey - I think you can put some money on that having over revs!

Exactly, theorists like this stop people using their cars as intended! More get crashed on the road than "abused" on track IMO

Jap import and modified. If it makes mid estimate I imagine it would be doing well. Unmolested and UK/European origin with that mileage and it would be 70k + GBP at a guess. Thanks for the link though - East Anglia Auctions do have some interesting stuff pop up occasionally.

Have you seen the car yet?

I was put off one recently that had done a lot of track work due to the underside being all beaten up. Was wondering what this is like underneath? The boot floor often has curb/off track scars.

Could be a cheap car to put standard one day.

Saw it this afternoon, and I thought it looked like an honest car; definitely been used on the track as the photos suggested, but doesn't look abused anywhere to me. It's got a good few stone chips on the front bumper but all the paint looks original and i'd say its a straight car, no signs of any repair work anywhere, all the stickers present and correct under bonnet, on chassis and in the door pillar, it's a German Specification car, had UK plates on so I presume it is UK registered, but didn't ask to confirm this.

Regarding your question of the underside, it's very low so I struggled to get right under it, but looks very clean and original underneath to me.
, all the covers are present and correct and couldn't see anything bent or scratched. It's got a sports exhaust and sounds loud but good noise, brakes on the front are upgraded, not sure what make discs are, they're part worn but still ok. It does have a few driver aids inside like throttle position and brake pressure monitor which would be useful on track if you have a driver coach with you, but i'd remove them if it was my car as they clutter the dash a bit, but they'd be easy enough to take out.

Drove up there in my Mk1 and really enjoyed myself. regarding this car I would say if you want a GT3 to park in the garage as a pension plan then this isn't the car for you but if (like me) you use your cars for weekend blast, track days, etc. as they were meant to be used then this could be a great car, you could use it without fretting about depreciating it and even at top end of guide it's a cheap 996.1 GT3.

I keep looking at the advert.. do I sell my CR (used for weekend blasts etc..) and buy this tuning back to standard over the next year or two.

I'm assuming CR means Cayman R? Answer to your question has to be yes i'd say.

Did you get anymore info? Is there anything with it? Paperwork?

Can't be there on the day but going to try and have a look beforehand. Like the idea of a winter project to get the trim etc together and have a road legal track toy.

I've had recent experience of importing a Mk1 GT3 from Japan. Mine looked like a pretty standard comfort spec car and the dealer gave no indication that it had non-standard suspension and diff. Decided to take the suspension back to stock and this is where problems may arise if anyone is thinking of doing the same with this car - annoyingly some of the stock parts are NLA and even after sourcing used dampers I'm looking at a touch over £2k for just the parts alone (inc. refurb). Mine also has an aftermarket clutch which I'll be looking to change at some point and all these things add up.

I'd be surprised if it makes anywhere near the lower end of that estimate - could be a bargain for someone though. Would be interesting to see what, if any, paperwork comes with it.

Not good for you at all if you received a car you didn't know was modified, dealers selling overseas should really be honest and transparent, but that is always a risk when you buy blind; but how did you mange to pay that much for used dampers? a new set of OE Bilsteins don't cost that much and if you're buying a car with adjustable coil overs, you should be able to get a nice ride with adjustment only, worst case a change of springs, which cost a good deal less than GBP 2K. In regards to a diff, if I were looking i'd go aftermarket anyway, the factory one is OK rather than good and there are a few good aftermarket options that won't cost a fortune.

In regards to this car, there is some paperwork, but i didn't go through it as I don't think I could justify having two 996 GT3's really, although if this one is going at the lower end of the estimate, I'd be very tempted to try that justification with the Mrs!

For me having looked at it I don't see it being bought by someone looking to go completely back to stock, more likely it will be bought by someone who will put carpet and trim in (maybe GBP 500 from a breaker's yard as everything but rear carpet is shared with std. Carrera models), maybe a different geo set up for fast road/ track (few hundred with someone who knows what they are doing). If it was mine i'd look out for a factory boot lid/ spoiler and rear bumper maybe on eBay (again a few hundred quid each probably). Done over several months of ownership buying parts as they come up for the right money it won't cost a fortune at all and then you've got a great fast road/ track GT3 at a fraction of what it would cost to buy a standard car and tune it up.

Now having written that I am talking myself in to it................suggestions on a post card as to how I explain to the Mrs that I really do need another GT3

Sorry I was referring to the cost of taking the suspension back to stock rather than damper costs. For anyone interested, having just looked through my receipts, the breakdown is as follows:

£285 used dampers
£125 rear top mounts (currently has Cup mounts which aren't compatible with OEM shocks)
£500 F & R springs seats and few other OE bits and peices that where required - couldn't reuse anything that is currently fitted
£200 shock locking collars, spring platforms & ARB drop mount link bracket since these where seized solid on the used shocks
£460 damper refurb by Bilstein
£450 new springs - had to pay £100 extra for the fronts as they are NLA

Most of the OEM parts where bought from either FVD or Rosepassion as they where cheaper than OPC and more importantly could source the parts. My OPC told me that both F & R Mk1 springs where NLA. With hindsight it may have been cheaper and quicker to simply replace the suspension with something like Ohlins R&T but I didn't know what I do now.

As you say if you're going to do a few cosmetic bits to it and keep the mechanicals pretty much as is then it makes a lot of sense.
