Any tips where to find a good 996 C4S cab?
Discussion
Been trying to hunt down an unadulterated 996 for a few weeks. Ideally:
- auto
- convertible
- C4S
There are so many scruffy cars out there, fallen into the hands of rookie 'driveway' dealers so its turning into a real hassle to find a minter!
I've been keeping an eye on the usual... Pistonheads, Auto Trader, eBay, even BCA. But am I missing anything? Are there any forums or enthusiast sites worth subscribing to on which these sort of cars come up for sale?
Also, if the right car comes up privately, any recommendations on who to use for an inspection? I'm so fearful of the dreaded IMS issue and am not sure if AA/RAC inspectors would even know what to look out for.
Any advice appreciated! Thanks

IMS bearing is easy to spot once it's failed. Not likely to show any real signs before that.
Not quite cab weather, so just be patient.

I see you've owned one before. How are they? I know that's a very vague question... I'm looking for something that I can take out for short (and long) distance journeys when I can't face the noise and sweat inducing nature of the TVR and want something a bit tamer. Sound about right?
They are fantastic cars and you are looking for exactly what I was looking for and ended up getting last year.
I looked at a few in the middle price bracket and soon realised that paying the upper end of the bracket was worth it as the condition between a middle and high price car was significant in what I viewed.
I ended up with a 27K mile, seal grey, auto cab and if you are wanting a decent vehicle to cruise around in that has a decent level of performance and grip you will not be disappointed.
If the Porsche value trend continues in the same way as they always have then spending the extra money now is never a bad idea and you always have peace of mind that you have an exceptional example rather than an ok one and the reality is the difference in price is probably only 5K between the 2 at the moment.

Auto, cab with 4WD in a 996, did any one even buy one new ! I could not think of a worse thing to own with a Porsche badge on it. - auto

Porsche911R,
That's were personal opinions mean Porsche can sell a lot of different models.
The auto suits a cab as you don't buy a cab to fly around at warp speed, although in real terms the difference in speed from a-b is not that great unless you are on the ragged edge. Then if you go for 4wd you get the lovely wide body, which looks great without the turbo add on items.
