Okay, I have a 991 3.4. So have vested interest in new car. Being not so good with a turbo. Journalists annoy me. Read any article and they all say: "it's a triumph over the old car......incredible turbo engineering......best 911 ever.......(small print bit).......however, it's not as much fun as the old one. But I will write my article to make this sound like this fact is not relevant.
IT IS!! WHAT IS MORE FUN TO DRIVE? Which would you take home money no object?!! Tell us.

Hi Gus, I have a few 911's, drove the 991.2 a few weeks ago, it's an incredibly capable car BUT it's boring, the PES does it's best but it's so quiet and dull, the turbos are noticeable i.e. some lag on pickup. i couldn't wait to get out of it and back into my daily which is a 991.1 targa 4s. Even with the extra weight the targa is overall more fun. Why don't you arrange a drive back to back with say a .1 gts, that would be my choice right now but unfortunately i'm awaiting a new rs hehehe.

I am afraid that most magazines sit on this fence like this. They dont want to upset anybody.IT IS!! WHAT IS MORE FUN TO DRIVE? Which would you take home money no object?!! Tell us.
Even the Porsche indy mags do it. It is frustrating and bloody boring!
911 and Porsche World are guilty of this this month' especially on the 981 Spyder, the guy just couldn't actually say he prefered the 987. but heaped lots of praise on it, more so than the 981, then copped out saying you needed both...
I suppose if you say the old car is better than the new one thats for sale you won't be driving many more new Porsches any time soon.
I fit to add that they did the same thing on a 991 RS v 997 4.0 RS test in Total 911 last month as well, the result was you need both.

The Porsche indy mags spend quite a lot of words heaping praise on the 986/996 generation these days.
Now, why would they do that? Lots of potential readers perhaps? I guess they have no choice though, if they dont attract those owners, then their readership will inevitably decrease.

I understand this view, but I am not sure the two are so far detached? They are certainly not mutually exclusive.Surely, journalism has to be entertaining for it to reach a wide audience and be successful? Clarksons 'style' made Top Gear a huge success.
Surely you are not suggesting that journalist should not entertain?
+1 for the below. I have a .1 GTS which I drove to Silverstone to drive the .2 S with RWS - the drama of winding the engine up with that awesome accompanying induction sound has been lost. For me the .1 GTS is the last of the best NA 911s and history will look favourably upon that model once the dust has settled.

Good points above about journalists but the more specialist press who perhaps speak to a more focused audience can afford to not sit on the fence

The Carrera S with 414bhp instead of 364bhp, is considerably better. ...
But not even this can make the new 911 more exciting than the car it replaces, which to me is a retrograde step.

+2, drove a 991.1 GTS and a 991.2 S (with PSE, PDK, rear wheel steer) back to back last week, had the 991.2 for an hour to myself. I really, reeeeally wanted to like the 991.2, was all set to order one, had a play on the configurator, just needed the drive to be decent, a step up from my CGTS. Engine sounded ok/good on startup, a good start I thought, steering was super light (too light perhaps), was so darn quick (I mean, felt pretty explosive to me), and extremely comfortable. I liked the fact that Sport+ allowed 7th on PDK, and that there was no kickdown on the throttle, also liked the manettino and really liked the new PCM. I tried with the sunroof open, windows open, mix of roads, but just kept lacking any real soul, or any kind of real crescendo. Lots of turbo whistle with the windows down. It's one of those engines that feels like it's just about to sound/feel great when you find it bouncing off the redline like crazy and you didn't even notice. Was so disappointed. Firing up the 991.1 GTS, even in that split second, your body just feels it, it pushes that grin wide on your face, you know, the one you can't control even if you try to, the one that gets so wide as you drive around and accelerate it actually hurts. The drive of that GTS was epic. After that drive it is now something I am seriously considering as my next car (mostly if I can't find a reasonably priced 981 Spyder first). The feel, sound, sensation of that engine was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. So, a bittersweet experience, I'd have preferred the newer car, I can only despair, and lament in surprise at how wide the difference in soul felt to me.d16rr said:

The 981 Spyder sounds better (inside and out), is more involving, greater fun and is as fast overall as the 991 GTS. Residually, it will win hands down too.Only downsides are the amount of attention it receives...... and of course no rear seats.
