A friend in the USA has just bought a minty, low mileage 1992 964 Carrera Coupe Manual - for the equivalent of about £17k (with the bonus being that its totally rust free)

With 964 prices starting to look somewhat far fetched over here - whats the viability of converting LHD 964's to RHD?? I know it was done by a few people with Euro imports back in the 90's - but not aware of what involved and if its as straight forward as it is on the older cars?

You're far better off leaving it LHD. RHD cars have the pedals off set which can be a pain on long journeys especially on the knees. LHD cars are set up just right in terms of pedals.

There's a huge stigma attached to LHD>RHD conversions.

Whatever it costs, it will probably devalue the car by a similar amount.

Leave it as it left the factory and keep it original IMO.

With the proviso that this is my opinion and mine alone:

There is no real reason to do this. LHD is a relatively minor inconvenience that only comes into play when overtaking on narrow roads. And the car will forever be 'tainted' as the market values originality. If a US import appeals to you, by all means do it. But keep the car LHD and spend the (considerable) sum you would have spent on the conversion getting the car into tip-top condition.

Can only echo the thoughts above. LHD is how it was designed; RHD being a bodge if you will hehe Pedal off-set is terrible on RHD cars. Swap the headlights to RHD units and swap the rear fog over and you are done wink

Don't do it. Sell and buy a RHD.

I specifically buy LHD air cooled ... Just can't get on with rhd pedal position, especially in the 964/993 if they have the sport seats which fix your pelvis is a straight ahead position.

Both my 2.4s and 964 are LHD ... 964 took me an age to find and ultimately had to go to Germany and apricots seller to buy it

Or more extensively - acquire from the US for cheap and bring it back to continental spec (so get rid of the nasty bumperettes and so on). If you still really want RHD, you then sell it to someone on the continent (where LHD prices are strongest), buy a UK RHD car and probably end up in profit ... ? scratchchin
