996 turbo wheel tyre combo options
Discussion
Hi All,
I’d be grateful for some help/recommendations on wheels/tyres for my car. Its a 9e30 996 turbo running RWD. The car is an all purpose car.
When I bought it had 19” wheels on it. I don’t think the previous owner tracked it as on track its rubbing on the wheel arches. I was visiting JZM a few weeks ago and mentioned it to Steve who was of the opinion that these cars should be kept on 18” wheels (what they are designed with, 19” are a heavier wheel and heavier tyre etc).
18” being lighter is something I do like the sound of. Thus I’ll probably go with the 18” OZ Alleggerita HLT’s.
My other problem is the choice of tyre in 19”. Its currently running MPSS which aren’t great. Thus my current thinking is MPSC2 on 18” which I have run on my old GT3 for years and are a brilliant tyre.
Some initial questions please:
1. As I understand it the standard wheels are 18x8 ET50, and 18x11 ET45.?
2. Has anyone done any research as to the cheapest place to get OZ wheels from?
3. Its not advisable to go to the wider 18x8.5 and 18x12 GT2 sizes as the GT2 has arches already rolled to fit these wider wheels but the Turbo doesn’t? (also the MPSC2 doesn’t come in this size)
I should mention what the car will be used for before my next question. It’s an all purpose car that will do/does trackdays, long European motorway journeys, vmax runs, and weekends away with the girlie. So I’m not really interested in what it will take to run rubberband 315/25 etc on the rear.
4. What I would love to hear is what tyres people are running who’s car does trackdays, ie any other options involving size combos or other tyre brands (R888 etc (although I haven’t come across anything better than the mpsc2 yet)).
5. Also are people running a 235 tyre on the front (instead of the standard 225/40) to counteract the understeer, and are they running a 235/35 or 235/40?
Many thanks,
BJ

When I first go my 996tt, it was running 235s on the front. I hear it does the diffs no good and, certainly, now I have 225s on, it seems a lot happier manouevering at parking speeds; the best way to describe it is, with 235s, it felt like a 4x4 getting diff wind-up.
Anyway, you have no 4x4, so 235s are worth a try because they certainly did clear my arches okay.
I've just swapped onto PS2s, front and rear, but don;t really do much tracking so can't comment on their merits, relative or otherwise.
ETA I' pretty sure they were 235/35 but I cannot honestly be 100% certain. Sorry!

I had GT2 sized Forgestar F14's on my 996 Turbo. Looked good and didn't run but very few tyre choices for the rear. Went back to the standard turbo wheels with spacers. Again though, very few tyre choices here either. Went P Zero but not out of choice - PS3 were out of stock at the time. Not sure about availability of R compound tyres
