996 GT3 Suspension

CG stock refurbed OEM and do a swap
Unless your tracking the car OEM will be sufficient, as an owner who had to look into this route last year, unlike another poster... i was advised by other owners to stick with OEM instead of going down the R&T route (unless you really like tinkering)
The GT3 is not one of the firmest road cars going, yes springs are stiff, no its not the firmest

I have a pair of OEM front struts for my 2004 996 GT3 which were fitted by JZM in November last year and I removed to replace the whole set up with Ohlins less than 100 miles later. They were over £400 each plus fitting and come with the original OEM springs. I have the original rear set of dampers with the springs too which have no issues but are 2004 items and had done 26k miles. The only issue is that the hex head on the thread at the top of one of the new front struts is a bit damaged but this will not be an issue for any reuse.
Therefore I have a full set of OEM suspension in stock with the fronts being practically new so PM me with an offer if you like.
The £1500 Ohlins R&T are a good option to be honest if you want to be able to adapt the car between road and track. If anything they seem too cheap for Ohlins but I can assure you they work well and appear to be typical Ohlins quality

One buys a GT3 to have a play on track other wise why bother having it as a 100% road car ?Unless your tracking the car OEM will be sufficient, as an owner who had to look into this route last year, unlike another poster... i was advised by other owners to stick with OEM instead of going down the R&T route (unless you really like tinkering)

With road and track Ohlins you get the best of both, better track setup and plusher road set up !
No brainer IMO esp if oem shocks are best the best, most of the cost is labour to strip and rebuild car and set up.

Yet again you're applying YOUR binary thought processes to what is a subjective matter for others.
Why bother arguing with him or having a different opinion? I was going to counter argument last night but decided to spend my time better and watch some porn instead.
You could say why buy a GT4 then only track it once a year, why make a spyder as 'pure' as possible then never drive/track it.
Your also forgetting the fountain of knowledge this man has and doesnt need to speak to other owners for their opinions on something when he knows he is correct.

It's a fair comment :-) and a forum is just people posting their own opinion about stuff after all. some opinions help, some make people think harder about the choices, some make people swear a lot, lol that's forums !
I sold my 996 GT3 because I did NOT track it and for a 100% road car it was piss poor imho. that's my opinion, get it :-) it matters not what any one thinks about the 996 GT3, I hated it as a road car as do many people inc many R owners who used to own one !
Dan just sold one of the best speced lowest miles Cayman R's for a 996 GT3 (that's his choice of course)but the R is the better road car by a country mile, unless you want to venture on track.
Now if one does want to see a track even once or twice a year and the oem shocks are shot, you must agree that to pay £1k to upgrade to Ohlins R&T would be a no brainer if one is going to pay >£2 at CoG for a sus refresh and fast road geo (again a fast road geo on the 996 will be bumpy and tram line like crazy)
Even chris at CoG will confirm he dislikes the GT3 as a road car and wonders why people bother, but he will take your money if that's what people ask for. !
AT least a set of plusher shocks will make it a far far better road car, even a great one maybe, I see a few people fitting R&T now days to 997's and it's the 1st thing I would do for sure, rather than pay £800 to swap oem for rebuilt oem !(inc labour)
As you know I love cars, I do talk a lot and have VERY strong opinions, but again they are only that "my own opinions"
I want Dan to really enjoy his 996GT3 esp after having a R which sus is just about spot on for an alive sports car.
It's well know on here now (even though it's taken 10 years, and some main BIG GT3 posters to start posting this) that a set of nice shocks and a new diff is prob the best thing you can do to a GT3 (I would add short final drive to that as well)

I may as well answer as you really do dislike my posts, and I like to always answer your slagging match posts to allow people to form a view of the types of people on here. You could say why buy a GT4 then only track it once a year, why make a spyder as 'pure' as possible then never drive/track it.

Different opinions are great, it helps people and the more people who post on the subject the better it is. Try it :-)
But if you want to derail the thread AS NORMAL and go off topic ! here are the answers you seem puzzled about !
Why buy a GT4 ?, that's easy, it was a no brainer to try one and get paid £15k overs to do so., it also rides very very push.
mines up for sale do you want it :-p ?
Why make a Spyder as pure as possible ?, again I came from Lotus, Porsche make nothing like a Lotus, but the Spyder again a no brainer to make pure, as I paid well under £40k for it and the only other car I would have as my fun car in place of it would be another Lotus, but I like the Spyder better than an Elise esp the engine and strong stable values of such a rare car, It's the perfect Sunday drive just for fun, nothing new can match it, Porsche went 3/4 of the way to make it one of the best cars they have ever built, I thought it was worth tweaking and finishing the job off to make it an amazing car to drive.
I have no need to do track days, but the odd Euro hoon with like minded people to a nice track is great fun, again try it one day !
Now last I would rather read an informed opinion backed up by some thing as a good counter argument , rather than the normal forum slagging match's you are now known for !
yes quite....
ive already given my opinion based upon what i went through and i cba to go into the ins and outs of it all. Im sure Dan is big enough to speak to other owners, like i did, or research the internet to find out views on OEM/R&T at that price point and for what he wants to accomplish. From what i could remember, unless you like tinkering with the settings then OEM was best. Which Slippydiff appeared to agree with.
My other comment was talking to Slippydiff.
Im surprised youve not mentioned about every single bit of rubber needing to be replaced, even if CG or another qualified specialist says its not tbh
i would have been tempted by your gt4 but alas youve specced buckets (pointless on a road car dont you think) and that tacky contrasting stitching

They are indeed designed to enable individuals to voice their opinions., but what becomes tiresome is when you regurgitate the same old thing infinitium and frequently in a manner that is rude, patronising and in such a a way as to give the impression your views/opinions are the only ones worthy of consideration.I sold my 996 GT3 because I did NOT track it and for a 100% road car it was piss poor imho. that's my opinion, get it :-) it matters not what any one thinks about the 996 GT3, I hated it as a road car as do many people inc many R owners who used to own one !

There will always be some converts from 996 GT3 to Cayman R, GT4/Spyder, that doesn't automatically make the 996 GT3 a bad car (be that for use on road or track). And whilst it's convenient for YOU, and YOUR argument, that individuals such as Chris W have gone to the darkside, it doesn't suddenly mean that several thousand 997/996 GT3 owners now consider their cars to be useless.
It's no difference to your assumption that the 996 GT3 MUST be a hopeless/bad car because plenty have had numerous owners. On that basis most GT4's must be hopeless cars too ?
You do make some pertinent points, and as I've said before, I admire your enthusiasm and the lengths you go to improve your cars, but just be aware that doesn't make you the self professed "expert" you think you are on all things Porsche.

H, don't worry about Chris, he's got a 996 GT3 mk1 one as well...so not completely gone to the dark side.

Late June or early July I think, at about the same time he moved the 997 GT3 clubbie on. He told us about it when we met up for our Spa trip at the beginning of August. I don't recall the full spec even though he'll have told us all about...you know what he's like when he starts!
