Hi,
so the back of 996.2 C2 started making a noise it shouldn't have. Yep, I'll just panic and search for somewhere to pull over. It wasn't metallic so I listened thinking oh it's only the alternator . Sound stopped and then no power steering - oil on ground at the front drivers side wheel. The rack sprung a leak on one of the two rigid pipes (rusted through) that are only fixed to the rack itself.

Anyone got any advice for removing it for new pipes to go on? I've read up on all the info I can find about it but want to be sure before I tackle it. It's got PSM so a steering angle sensor which I don't want to upset in the process.

Had same fault a few years ago on my 996.1 ...needed a new rack as fittings had badly deteriorated. Bill was £1400 at OPC . Was told front subframe had to be dropped to access/remove rack so maybe best to enquire if you need to do same before starting job. Annoying as the hydraulic lines ( and brake pipes) are poor quality material , corroding easily. My crappy VW was same age and its pipes were still like new , abviously a better quality material. good luck with repair.

Thanks for that. One of the rack pipes has a pin hole and i could see a jet of fluid shooting out when I refilled and tested to find out where the leak was. The quality of those parts are atrocious. I really should have done a better inspection when I was in there changing the brake discs a while back.

Good excuse to get the Bentley service manual for other jobs.
