2001 996 C4 problem diagnosis

Hi fellow 996ers. I have a problem with the car and wonder if you can help diagnose it...

There is a short wrenching/screeching/whirring noise coming from the nearside rear wheel when accelerating in first or second gear after changing gear, depressing the accelerator and during letting the clutch out. It does not happen all the time and isn't correlated with turning the steering wheel. It was a rare event but now happens more frequently, such as once or twice a journey.

My thinking is a drive shaft boot has corroded and something has got in the joint, or the joint there is wearing out.

Brake shoe spring snapped and catching between the shoe and hub?

If it is directly associated with riding the clutch it's possible the clutch release bearing is making the noise - try loading the clutch on a steep incline to see if the noise is replicated.

The bearing can become noisy when it contacts the diaphragm spring of the clutch cover - if it is then it may need a replacement.
