Currently on the look out for a 997 & came across this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201783125732
New engine was fitted in 09 and has around 26k on it, the rest has 59k on it. I would be getting a full inspection before making the 600 mile round trip.

Love the look of the car with the gen 2 lights, sun roof and PSE which was also on my list.

I know there is a few enthusiasts on here, is there anything I am missing with the car?

I'd largely ignore the new engine. Car looks ok, but bear in mind cars that have been fiddled with tend to have less general appeal.

Thanks. I asked him the reason for the new engine and they were not sure, I can only presume the last one ate it self whilst under Porsche warranty. All paperwork is there for the work.

Probably IMS failure, as the mileage wasn't that high.

Thats true.

I think the only way of getting some peace of mind will be a proper inspection on the car.
The car is in Cardiff, from what I can see Chris Denning is the man to go to in that area, I will give him a bell on monday and get some costs for an inspection.

Thanks

Also can anyone shed some light on the OPC warranty, how much does it cost and would they cover this car?
I presume so considering the engine was actually fitted by them, however not original to the rest of the car it self.

They wouldn't cover this car due to the modifications. It's about a grand a year once the car passes the 111 point check. It'll need to go back to standard and have suitable N rated tyres and Porsche battery, for a start.

Thanks. Considering I was on the edge of placing a deposit on the car and arranging the inspection etc I have now been completely put off by the attitude of the 'dealer'.

Having asked only 3-5 basic questions on the car I dont think I am being a hinderance, my last one which I even stated was a long shot was asking if he knew if the last owner had taken out a Porsche warranty as I have seen posts where people have not realised but their car was covered from an existing policy. His response was as follows:

'it was installed august 2009 it would be an amazing warranty to have lasted 8 years! are you sure you really want a used vehicle maybe a new one would suit you better, even then you would only get 3 years warranty'

I replied stating that warranties can be renewed and wondered if there was any old warranty paperwork out of pure luck only to be sent the last reply:

'I think you're going to have a very long search looking for used vehicles with Porsche warranties unless you go to a Porsche dealer my advice is to go to a Porsche dealer and buy a used vehicle from them, I wish I hadn't mentioned it in the listing that it has had a new engine it seems to stress people out Pretend It's on the original engine and it's done 56k also people seem to prefer the smaller IMS bearing rather than the later upgraded larger bearing'

Terrible service, no chance I am stretching my budget and making a 600 mile round trip for that attitude. My only thinking is there is something to hide and he doesnt want me to get it inspected!

Jesus wept....what an ignorant prick.

I was about to post you should only buy that car at a discount to what a car would cost with original engine I would say at least £3k cheaper. There's no way he'll have paid book for it,

Very ignorant, unless he is going to provide me with a new 911 for the 20-23k mark then 997 is the market.

This was two emails after asking about the inspection, I can only presume he isn't wanting this to happen so some poor buyer will likely get stuck with a dog!

Doesn't sound like it went well.

There was a cutoff at nine years old for applying a Porsche warranty. They extended this, but only about a year ago. You can't buy a car from a non-Porsche dealer and benefit from any existing warranty under the terms of the agreement. Some dealers use SoR as a method or circumventing this.

They might get a lot of tyre kickers and dreamers but it's a shame he thought you were another one.

He may have thought that but asking 4/5 questions about a £23,000 car is surely normal, all of them knowledgable regarding the model not stuff like 'are the tyres OK?' etc.

I made it clear I would have to make a 600 mile round trip and would he hold it for me if I left a deposit. Then he goes off on one completely out the blue.
Even if he did think I was a time waster he could have just replied 'no warranty unfortunately'.

Having checked his 'business' address it is registered at a home address which isn't ideal and chances are absolutely no come back on the car if something went within the first few weeks.

Run don't walk. If that's his attitude pre sale, imagine once it's bought and something goes wrong.

Didn't even bother to reply to his last email, not wasting my time. How does he expect to sell cars with an attitude like that. If all had gone OK I would have been putting a deposit on that Monday!
Idiotic..

It's got three keys, pasm, pse and some other nice options. It's "cheap" road tax (by 5 days). It's also a decent (if unexciting) colour combination. The ad quite clearly states new engine from Porsche. It'll have the same IMS bearing as the old engine. But that's not the point. The old engine will almost certainly have died from bore scoring (and the new one might too).

As someone else said, even if there did happen to be paperwork for an up to date Porsche warranty, it would be invalid for the modifications and resale through a non-franchised dealer.

Given the spec of the car and the fact that the guy actually replied to your emails (so many traders don't bother) I think you're being hasty in dismissing it. He probably deals day in day out with people with unrealistic expectations and happened to call you wrongly. He probably also knows the car will sell easily...

Just my opinion - no connection, although I can vouch for Chris Denning if you do change your mind.

ETA: I would, however, understand if you turned it down because of the number plate and what that might tell you about the previous owner...

I dont think we can really call him a dealer, he seems to be a private seller/small time trader working from home with a Ebay business account which anyone can open.
If for example there was any problems on my 300 mile trip back home I highly doubt he would be willing to help.

Asking questions relating to the car is surely part of his job, I didn't send him a list of pointless questions and made it clear I was very interested.

Regardless if your spending £1000 or £50,000 you should be treat with some level of respect and at the end of the day which 'dealer' tells you to buy else where, its in their best interest to bag a sale especially when its the most expensive car he is currently selling? Personally I think there maybe something wrong with the car possibly minor bore scoring which he knows and if I am getting the full inspectection then its going to show up. I could be totally wrong and he could just be an arrogant idiot.

I am in no major rush so the hunt continues, had he acted differently I think there would have been a deal done now but I am not going out my way to line the pockets of someone like that.

You are probably right and to be honest someone with little knowledge will come along and buy it asking only basic questions with no in depth knowledge of the common faults.
As you say he could just be trying his luck, buying cheap and sticking a couple of grand on top, out the door & job done.

I dread to think what would happen if there was a problem and you called him for some sort of come back!

Going to bump this post up for the following:

http://www.evanshalshaw.com/search/vehicledetails/...

Seen this come for sale earlier and gave the dealer a call to discuss, to be honest he didn't know a lot and was just going off the paperwork however from what I could gathered it has a FSH which is a mix of Porsche and a specialist garage, the last service was 2 years ago/20k which was a minor so it will be needing a major service immediately I would expect, prior to that it was serviced every 10-15k. There is about 25-30 pages of work, MOTs, invoices etc with the car which I am keen to look through..

Spec wise the car seems good with plenty of extras, the colour isn't my preferred choice but at the right price I would consider it.
I know E.H dont have a good reputation so the car would be getting inspected.

Any thoughts on it? I have a viewing booked Saturday so can get full info then, based on the above I would be putting a cheeky offer in. I dont need finance which puts me in a good position.

Looks ok. Subject to being properly checked you ought to be ok.

Not sure what they'll do on price. Lack of finance just means less commission. They do a WBAC type thing, so might not have a lot of margin.
