Hi all
Currently fortunate enough to have in my garage a stunning B7 RS4 saloon (winter) and a 997 Carrera S manual (summer)
Love them both but am having a mid life crisis again and fancy something a little more special
So sell both and have one special car?
Can't face being without a 911 so considering either a GT3 or Turbo 997 gen1
Having followed recent threads on the GT3 I'm really worried about buying a potential money pit..... although that's where my heart lies ..... although I've wanted a turbo since I was about 5 smile
Really appreciate thoughts and advise
Thanks Ric

Finally bought a 997.1 GT3 today and sounds like a similar decision you're going through. Also test drove:

997.1 turbo (tip). Didn't like the gearbox at all.
997.2 turbo (pdk). Very quick. But lacked any sort of theatre from the sound of the engine. Looked great though.
997.2 GTS (pdk). More engine sound/character. But wasn't convinced it was special enough.
997.1 GT3. The one I went with. Loads of character and get an inspection before you buy.

But ultimately you'll need to try for yourself to know what's right for you.

Leaning towards the GT3 budget £80k max really.... don't do finance
What are the thoughts on mileage/owners...... obviously the less the better but these type of cars seem to change hands quite quickly?
Any picssmile

This is the one I bought:

http://knowlhill.com/showroom/detail/228-porsche-9...

Think it's had 5 owners. But changing every 2 years seems fine. Needed a few bits doing after I got it inspected but dealer was good in sorting.

You should be ok at £80k and probably around 30k miles at that price.

Another thing to look at is the rev report as that'll give you some insight in to how the car's been driven.

I had a 997.1 GT3 for a while....now have a manual 997.1 turbo. One is designed for track/occasional road and the other for road/occasional track, If you find a nice example of either go for it.

I love both cars....GT3 engine noise and track ability....turbo power and fast road focus. I took the turbo on track last year and was surprised at how good it was.

I'm surprised the Carrera S doesn't feel special enough. Fabulous car.

Saw a red 981 S and black 997 Carrera S playing around with each other a few days ago on the A414 and the old-timer looked sooooo much prettier. If the Carrera S isn't pushing the right buttons than I'd say GT3 but be prepared for a heavyish clutch and firm ride. They're pretty bullet proof if you get one thats been kept in good condition. 80k will certainly buy you a lovely gen 1 GT3 - best looking 997 for me but would be a chore if I had to use it for everything but many do.

The 997 turbo is as easy to drive as Nissan Micra and less engaging than your Carrera S but you don't get tired after long journeys if you lope about in it as apart from the gearshift the control weights are all light. On the other hand if you drive the turbo at 8/10ths it can be a pretty physical and tiring expereince for some - this is what my older friends tell me anyway! NVH crap in turbo as loads of tyre roar but GT3 even worse as less sound insulation. I also think GT3 a better place to have your money but if its one car for everything turbo difficult to beat IMO (as is a Carrera S smile ).

winkAs an alternative I would throw in the 997GTS manual. More usable than a GT3 perhaps and more involving than a turbo.
GT4 is a good call (but I would say that) but maybe not the Cayman R wink

I'd say that if you have to think about it, you should get a Turbo. Preferably the 9972 with PDK and aero kit. The everyday supercar.

The Turbo is the missionary position. She's the wife that will never stray, the wife that will cook you a roast on a Sunday whilst you watch Top Gear re-runs on Dave. Honest and dependable but always predictable and rarely exciting.

The GT3 is the mistress who'll walk into your office with just a coat on. Every time you meet, it's exciting. You don't care about what's on TV; you're happy to go hungry - you just want that fix. You'll ask yourself why you're doing it, whilst simultaneously wanting to do it all over again.

Your car choice depends on the role you want it to fulfill.

Thats not quite the full picture. Send your turbo to 9e and they'll transform her into a tigress biggrin

You mean send your wife for some fake tits?

They look good...but the feel isn't quite the same.

I have owned both at the same time and still own the GT3.

The turbo was great to jump in and go to the shops or work etc but the GT3 is the more special one but not as an everyday car.

Running costs are very similar so I wouldn't let that be part of your decision process.

Nope she doesn't look any different. Its all about whats under her clothes. You never been attracted to that plain Jane secretary who's wearing suspenders underneath? Boring one minute and an animal once the doors closed and you're on your own with her....

The beauty of gen 1 turbo is the modularity of the engine, depending on your funds you can create with relative ease the car you want. Don't discount the tiptronic mine was 650hp and was a beast in some way more fun than my 991.

Snap but a manual. 7.2 GT3 or 7.2 GT3 RS definitely on the cards but can not replace the turbo as a dd IMO. I'm looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about.
