Facelift 996 Targa, likely to be a good investment??

Ok, so it will be my daily drive for 6 7 8 ,months a year, but something has to be the next big thing. Yes I realise as first watercooled, they are not going to go stratospheric like 964. But all the same. ??
Lets face it, nobody knows what the next 'big thing' is going to be....very few Targas have been great news, and I see the 996 no differently, but the old ones get dragged up in value in a frothy market. If its a good 996 you're after, I'd get a C4S.
If its a good investment you're after, put £500 a month into an ISA
The 996 Targa is a horrible thing. I looked at them before buying my 986S.
It's not really a proper Targa, more a big sliding sunroof. They creak, they leak and cost a bloody fortune to fix when they inevitably go wrong.
My bet (and I know it's against what most will say) for an appreciating 996 is the C2. Everyone raves about the C4S, but the C2 delivers more of the classic 911 experience than a C4S. The only reason I didn't go for a 996 C2 Coupe myself is that I really wanted a ragtop.

Agree with trabi on the targa, most are tips too.
I think the 993 is the best guide for future 996 collectibility, basic C2 is nice but people will still want the C4S (and turbo/GT) cars far more.
Aesthetics are purely subjective but the 993 is a prettier far than the 996 so whilst a basic 996 C2 on ambers will be claimed as a purer design, and might have a niche, beardy appeal, IMHO the shape hasn't aged well - it's smooth but as a result lacks character and looks a bit blobby and uninteresting to me. The C4S really has aged well and the wider hips and turbo stance make it way more desirable.
And avoid tips IMHO, history will not look back fondly on them for an enthusiasts classic car, get a nice clean coupe with no aftermarket tweaks (exhaust ok)

Having had one (Tip 3.6), I'd say the audience for the Targa is not the same as a 'normal' 996.
I was scratching an itch and wanted one more as a nice day cruiser rather than the more focused manual box rigid roof C2. The hatch was a bonus as well. Sure, it would go as well as any other similar engined 996 but that's sort of missing the point with a Targa.
It's gone now and I've reverted to a V8 cruiser which is more fit for purpose.
So IMHO and commenting on the OP, I think the user market is probably too small to make these more special over time than a C2/4/S. If I was doing it again and as others have said, it'd be a bog standard but mint manual C2 3.6, that's where the buyers will be in the future!

Getting a clean unmolested C2 manual coupe would be very high on my list tooDr S said:

Ok, I hear you, so investment wise not as good as I had hoped. But let's be honest, that was only ever going.to be the excuse to the wife. I appreciate a car is rarely an investment, I always buy with the heart not the head. I am just trying to justify it to myself really as I currently have a v nice 986 S Aero.

Not really a lot of point - the 986S is every bit as good a car as the 996, if not better...Paddy_N_Murphy said:
Surprised the 996 Targa is a Widebody.
996 Targas are 2WD,
997 Targas are 4WD - and hence wideys...
(at least thats my logic)
The real investments are 997 Targa4 - in black. With Sports Chrono. With a Set of Winter Wheels/Tyres. With Loads-a-miles !
I must admit to being a little confused myself, I had worked the 4x4 logic out myself without even realising it. Bloody hell,if I could afford it I'd go back to TVR ownership.996 Targas are 2WD,

Same with the 986, the Aero kit was factory fitted, but as they are reasonably rare, there is no guide for price difference with a standard 986 S.
If you are thinking an aerokit makes much if any difference to Boxster value I think you will be disappointed - hence no need for such a guide. It was a pricey option but marmite taste.
