I'm thinking of taking the plunge on a Porsche GT car, never owned one before but ive been in a few. I know the pros and cons of each of the above mentioned generations but just wanted to see what would you guys go for, a brand new manual 991.2 GT3 or a 997.2 RS 3.8, keeping in mind that the RS is slightly more expensive.

Very tricky, as the RS is £50k more expensive !

ALso depends what you have as a daily, a 991.2 Turbo S and a 997.2 RS is a great 2 car garage.

I would say RS if you have the money and it's a weekend car, 991.2 GT3 if you plan to use it more, this new engine sounds amazing on paper and will make the car.

I see you also have a "458 speciale" would you ever take the RS out over that :-)

The cars are way apart imo to choose one over the other, it depends on personal fleet and useage.

I cannot afford a 997.2 RS as a garage queen for very little use/toy, so I have plumped for a 991.2 GT3 myself as I'll use it a lot more.
I would love a 997.2RS as a toy and could get one I guess but it would make my daily a stter to afford the toy which sits in a garage 97% of the time !

If I had your cars I would sell the Jag F type, and buy a 991.2 Turbo S as that makes a great match to a 458 speciale imo.

991.2 GT3
Pros: ~£10-20k of free money if you can get one new
Cons: none

997.2 RS 3.8
Pros: none
Cons: doesn't come with free money

It's pretty much that simple imo, if you can buy a 991.2 GT3 then buy one, if you dislike it then just sell it, make £20k then buy a 997 RS

I suspect once 991.2 GT3's hit the "used market" the prices of the two cars will be pretty similar...close enough that at that level it "doesn't matter". I think it depends on how you want to use it....if it's more of a road car the 991.2 if its a track car 997.2. If you want to use the extensively 997.2 on the road a few select mods to the suspension and transmission are what is required to really get the best from it.

I suspect over the next five years 997.2 RS's are increasingly going to end up in the hands of collectors and not driven in anger. Stunning car built in low volumes with the halo of the 4.0 RS meaning that people will want the next best thing sitting in their collection (if you can;'t afford £500k for a 4.0 RS).

I asked a similar question of a couple of instructors at the PEC...except it was 991.1 RS vs 997.2 RS. Both didn't blink in saying the former.

not really I'd have thought. if it was for flipping it wouldn't even be a question to get the .2 gt3 at list.
