To be fair the OP should have said why they wanted to know. A marriage proposal is very different to a death threat wink

The driver of said car performed the most dangerous undertake I've ever seen on me last week and could have easily killed me and my wife. I'd like to have a word with him! Wondered if he was a PH member so I could message but seems unlikely.

There are two sides to every story. Perhaps the owner was not driving. It might have been in for a service and on test drive

lol but prob true, no one keeps left, it's very frustrating, I undertake easy 10 cars a day on ave.

what with 3 million people on the roads with no UK test pass and another 2 million over 75 years old, todays roads are crazy.
People are fast to point a finger but in most cases people just seem in their own world in the wrong lanes !!

It should be made legal to pass traffic on either side on the motorway.

The number of times I have seen people go from slip road, across two empty lanes only to sit in a queue of cars in the right-most lane is unbelievable. Then they will sit there regardless of what speed they are doing and not move left until their exit junction is reached.

I agree the system doesn't work as well as it should, but I think solution is making it socially unacceptable...

For example, it socially unacceptable to not always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.
even on a totally empty road the default is to be in the right lane !!

hence why I undertake most people on a daily basis !

on a motorway, one can either under take, or move across all 3 lanes over take said wker and move back across all 3 lanes,
:-(
sad times

In the days when most people were courteous to other road users I used to respect the only overtake on the right rule. Now bo**ocks. The standard of driving is generally appalling and most modern day cars are dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. The idiot who never should have passed their test in the first place. Not slating the OP and he may well have a genuine grievance.

I thought undertaking is not illegal now - genuine question?

I've been in my colleague's car recently and she has one of these black boxes from the insurance. Whenever she approaches the speed limit she immediately stops accelerating so she doesn't go over the limit. This often means she starts passing a car to the right and then has to stop and effectively hold her position if they are both travelling at said limit for that road. I find it super annoying when I'm behind cars which do this but now it will probably become more common.

There is no explicit law banning nearside passing. Not sure there ever was.

OP said it was a dangerous undertake and would be prosecuted as dangerous or careless driving irrespective of whether undertaking is illegal. IIRC it's a Highway Code should not rather than must not.

I got stopped for this a couple of months ago. The BiB told me that my driving was dangerous. They did mention the undertake but not in a way to make me believe that in itself warranted the dangerous driving charge. I hit up my solicitor and he confirmed this.

'Undertaking' is legal.

For it to be dangerous it would have to involve causing other road users to react in an extreme fashion - e.g. cutting across a car in the inside lane causing driver to have to brake and then going back into outside lane into a gap between the 'undertakee' and the car in front, causing the undertake to brake and tailgating the car in front.

Anything that causes cars to brake suddenly on a motorway is a bad idea as this is what leads to pile-up accidents, in which people can get killed. If you've watched any of those shows which show police or dash-cam footage there's no doubt that some drivers have no regard for the safety of others

I don't know what SAM 32 got up to and I don't think the OP should be attempting to get hold of him via a forum. What could be achieved - it's unlikely SAM 32 has the same view of the incident as the OP nor will he/she like being called out for it on a public forum.

I saw doing 90ish in lane 3 and passing traffic in lane 2 and there was a TT in front of me making good progress. The driver of the Porsche was just a fking prick, he tailgated me for about 5 or 6 miles although I was constantly passing traffic in lane 2.

I don't need any addition 'training' and am perfectly aware of other road users, but thanks for the condersening resposnse.

5 or 6 miles and you were aware of your surroundings!! Next time try this.

Observe vehicle behind wishing to pass
When space available pull into lane 2
Allow said vehicle to pass
Indicate and rejoin overtaking lane behind said car
Make normal progress - everybody happy
