Hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can help.

When I was putting the car away today I noticed a knocking sound, sounded more like an elastic band twang actually, when I turn the wheel a quarter turn left or right from wheels straight ahead.

Any idea what this could be?

Thanks in advance.

It's the front springs winding up as you turn the steering wheel. Make sure the bearings in the top mounts are in good condition and if they're ok, apply lubricant to the top and bottom of the springs where they meet upper and lower spring seats.

Here is the lower spring seat and the bottom of the front spring : (apply lubricant where arrrows are pointing)

And here is the top spring mount (1) and the top mount bearing insert (2) : (apply lubricant to 1)

Even something like WD40 should solve the problem (all be it temporarily) whereas something like this :

(or the HD version) should sort the issue permanently.

Bilstein do some blue PTFE washers to sit between the spring & the metal top & bottom. That really is the correct solution but obviously requires the suspension to be substantially disassembled to fit them. Don't ask me where to get them, mine were fitted by Centre Gravity years ago & are still doing their thing.

Thanks all. Will take a look / get it booked into a garage to have a proper look.

In the meantime, is it ok to drive?

Perfectly OK, it's just sticktion; the spring winds up until it can overcome the friction & then releases suddenly. That's the cause of the twang you hear.
