997.1 Oil level
Discussion
I have been keeping an eye on the oil level on my 997 and wondered when is the best time to check this.
When I start the car it can read 3/4 full thats sat on my drive at a slight angle however once warmed up when I check the oil level it can read much lower (just above the bottom marker), it does seem to vary a lot.
Anyone else have a similar problem and is there a way of checking for definite?

Yes this is pretty normal it's rather sensitive to everything I think, a slight slop, time of day etc etc.
On a serious note I would try and check when cold on a Flat surface, or as flat as possible and then see how this compares to your drive.
My drive has a slop and reads 2 higher than a flat surface so I check on my drive when cold and make sure it is always full to the top. If only somebody could invent a stick or something so you could actually see the oil ......

Thanks guys. Just took it out and parked it on a relatively flat road, not perfect but better than my drive.
The engine/oil was up to temp by then and it read at below the minimum marker, readings are all over the place.
The car had an engine rebuild in November/December where of course the oil and filter was changed, that was 2500 miles ago so should be plenty left however I am going to book it in for an oil & filter change ASAP.
Is there an oil light on these which would pop up if the oil was low?

What you're seeing is quite normal on a 997.2 3.8 DFI too.
After a track session I generally head for a pit garage as these tend to be level. With the Gen 2 the engine has to be warmed up to measure. After a session mine can be two bars down. If I have a breather and test again in the same place 20 minutes later, it can be one bar down! So even though it makes you wait > 1 min to test, more oil runs back while it's standing.

Thanks everyone.
I will check again when cold on a level surface, I am going to change the oil & filter anyway as it hasnt been done since the engine re-build.
MIllers Nanodrive 10w50 seems to be the one to go for, seems there is two variations? One with yellow detailing on the front and the other with red, both nanodrive 10/50. Which is the preferred choice?

Just checked again a couple of times and its flashing below the minimum marker.
The oil was last changed in December 16 and done around 2000 miles since, I have just read online that the difference between the minimum and max on the electronic gauge is 1.2L, over 2k its probably used 2L so flashing low will be right.
I have added 400ml of Mobil 1 oil which was in the car already and it hasn't brought the oil up enough to stop flashing so my next step is to get an oil and filter and start from fresh.
How often do you have to top up your 997?

The 997.2 engine has a shallower oil sump than the 997.1 so the oil level measurement is more affected if the car is not level.
I really wish they had put a standard dipstick in the engine rather than relying on electronic only measurement.
And of course, gen 2 oil level is checked hot.I really wish they had put a standard dipstick in the engine rather than relying on electronic only measurement.
Old skool dipstick would have been nice.
Oh, and how often to check = every tank full of fuel.
JCKST- Did the rebuild company not give directions about a running-in oil change? - I'm surprised if not.

Not to worry you but it shouldn't flash at all. From my experience new rebuilt engines might consume oil more than usual during running in period. Then it shouldn't consume at all, just usual annual or 5k oil change is enough. The oil was last changed in December 16 and done around 2000 miles since, I have just read online that the difference between the minimum and max on the electronic gauge is 1.2L, over 2k its probably used 2L so flashing low will be right.

My OCD forces me to take a photograph of my oil reading every time I leave the garage.
Also I always take a photograph after fill ups. And then I take some more when after it has been driven hard.
I always make sure to have a level surface.
The photos are always showing the oil temp and the odometer.
My 997.1 3.6l (new engine from Porsche with latest IMS design) is @90k miles now.
Over the 4k miles I've had her now, it has not used one drop of oil.
I understand that some engines consume more than others and up to 1.5l/1000km is normal according to the handbook.
