997.2 GTS N Rated Winter Tyres 19" RS Spyder LW Wheels
Discussion
Hi there I wonder if anyone can help ; 3 things :
1. I'm trying to find N rated winter tyres to go on my 19" LW RS Spyder Wheels on a 997.2 GTS - My OPC are struggling as they can't find any. I think they are saying it's easier to buy a tyre and wheel rather than just the tyre. I don't really want to buy new wheels as I like the look of the RS centre lock wheels and as such, I want to keep them on the car. Also I can't see the point (or extra cost) of two sets of wheels.
2. Is it also correct that putting non N rated tyres on the car will invalidate the warranty; I can see this being the case for commercial reasons for Porsche, however, I don't see what difference this really makes from a warranty perspective in the real world.
3. Do winter tyres really work as well as the marketing people would have us believe ? I guess I wonder if the performance and safety benefits are worth the extra cost and effort ?
Thanks in advance, RSVP911

Buy some tyres which fit, don’t worry about warranty you will take the tyres off in March !
Yes winters work better below 6oc. But the last 2 years the ave temp has been above that esp in the midlands.
If one lived in Scotland and went to work at 6am they are a must have “IN MY OPINION”
In the midlands I tend to get by, and if it is 2oc I drive slower.

I fitted 18" winter tyres and wheels a few weeks ago and in the cold and wet they are amazing and offer miles more grip than the 19" PS2 summer tyres I took off. If you have the storage space and have to drive your car all year round then a spare set of wheels and tyres are a no brainer and probably work out cost neutral if you keep the car for a while.

What he said! They're so much better in the wet/cold than summer tyres when temps get down towards freezing. Stopping distances much reduced. And then, of course, when it does snow you've a lot less to worry about that 99% of drivers. Although when it snowed last Sunday my neighbour who has a Golf R with winter tyres took two hours to do a 20 min journey because so many roads were blocked with crashed cars and lorries. Difference is you'll get home and not end up in a ditch though.
As for cost the tyres themselves are the same cost as summer tyres so that's cost neutral...so if you buy a set of wheels like as well your cost is the depreciation on the wheels themselves which if you own the car for a while if bugger all (maybe £1000 at the very worst) in the overall cost of running a 911 for a few years. It's a "no brainer" IMHO.

Thanks D - I’d agree with you and others on here about simply taking care on normal tyres - I’ve spent the last week driving my 981 Spyder on standard tyres and as you know the roads have been sYes winters work better below 6oc. Thing is the PS2 is over ten years old and was never a good tyre in the cold, I stopped using those back in 2010 ! I run PS4s and they work amazing in this weather. Maybe better than a low branded winter.

It’s very slippy on p zero's again I run 2 cars on PS4s and they feel great over the p zero in the cold.

My other half has been going to work early in the Golf where I have ditched the oem p zero for a PS4S. The tyre is amazing in winter for a high speed summer tyre.
I have done a mitchlin driving course winter vs summer tyres, it is night and day, but the person I did it with was still spinning the car on wets while I did not spin on summers, so as always experance is key to safety. When I went to wets I could correct a skid with a 1” wheel correction so loads of extra grip.
And remember a great tyre like the PS4s will out perform during the days above 4 or 5oc. Hence why I said in Scotland and working early , yes, in the Midlands where we just don't see snow, not worth it.
It’s a tricky subject as there is no right and wrong for UK ave temps and winters are just a 2 month fitment really.
This is not fact and is only my opinion :-)

Not convinced at all about this statement. I'm not calling BS but its a close call. Last year I had winters on my RS4 until we were consistently into double figures and they were light years ahead of the MPSS in the single figure temps, particularly if there was any kind of moisture on the roads. You could pretty much drive the car like it was a hot summers day. The same can be said for 997 on winters if anything they feel too good and there is a tendency to get carried away.Take this evening. Its zero or below outside and there is a dense fog. I've just drove into Manchester and back and the car felt planted even those low speed roundabout manoeuvres that can often cause the front to wash out a little were none existent.
I'm not saying the PS4 wont work in winter its just a dedicated low temp tyre works better. I'll know for certain next year because I'll be replacing the PS2s with PS4s.

t and quote a mpss ? I have ran 6 or 7 sets of mpss I switched to that tyre the day it was launched, I do Infact like it more than the PS4s for the summer, but as a wet tyre while it’s better than a PS2 the PS4s has moved the game on again for wet/cold use.
I have ran 10 plus sets of PS2, at least 6 sets of mpss, and 2 sets of PS4s, I have throw away 3 sets of p zero's and one set of Dunlop’s, I ran Winter one year did not bother again. But I work from home, start late, and if it's bad I stay at home. P zero and Dunlop’s will kill you in the cold lol. As I said no right and wrong for winter in the U.K.
This has been the coldest year for 4 or 5 years and I have had zero issues so far with the PS4s this year in both my R and my Golf.
I ran PS2 on my v8 bmw it would not go up hill even if it sleeted !!
I know many run these tyres still and most run the p zero n spec crap, both are dire in this cold weather.
I am not saying it going to outperform a winter, it's just nothing like a PS2 , P zero or mpss in the wet. And a person needs to look at where they live and what time they get out of bed.
Look at the PS4s wet tests and it scores 95%
I also said a winter is a good idea in some cases but just for 2 months.

My head is starting to hurt now - so if I was to get winter tyres for a 19” LW RS Spyder wheel - which should it be ?
Anyone send me a link as I’m confused
Do they need to be N rated? I have Pirelli Sottozero which I believe are N rated. Anyone send me a link as I’m confused

Here’s the thing. You may go out and buy wheels and tyres and then the following day the sun starts to shine and the temp rises and your £2k+ is rendered useless. Buying the wheels second hand helps to mitigate any loss as you will almost certainly recoup a good percentage of what you pay when you sell.
Get a trolley jack as well if you don’t already have one.

Does anyone know the size I’d need for a 19inch RS Spyder wheel of the GTS ?
Re trolley jack - I was going to get OPC to do the swapping over due to centre locks and lack of knowledge of how to torque correctly and also lack of correeect wrench

Cheers thanks for the link - I believe they have to be N rated for warranty validation purposes - god knows why , but thems the rules as I understand it.

235/35/19 & 295/30/19 one would assume if these are 8.5J x 19 and 11J x 19 wheels. As I said earlier, Nokian are also N rated. Does anyone know the size I’d need for a 19inch RS Spyder wheel of the GTS ?
