Hi,

I have a 2012 997 Turbo S which I’m considering tuning. I don’t really intend to sell the car although you never know in the future.

The car has done 30k so it’s not really a collectors car with high mileage although I’m only doing around 3k a year so eventually it will be low mileage in comparison to other cars.

What are your opinions on values of modified cars. I’m thinking of a remap exhaust with sports cats and new intakes. Obviously some of the modifications are bolt on so could be removed but the remap voids Porsche warranty for good which I have only just renewed for 2 year.

If you've only just extended the warranty I'd leave any mods until after it's run out otherwise you've just thrown away £2k.

Engine mods on more recent mainstream models are generally undesirable and you'd probably reduce the possible buyers pool if you ever had to/wanted to sell. In your position I'd likely leave well enough alone and keep extending the warranty for peace of mind.

Yes I know what you mean.

Although my other thought is it would take some failure for them to inspect the ECU most things would still be covered as they wouldn’t check

I am pretty sure Porsche have hidden codes. As soon as it is plugged into their diagnostic they will know it has been messed with. If you plan to keep it. Tune it and enjoy

For the performance you get with a remap it turns the car to almost hyper car performance .
Other items which aren’t engine related should still be covered . I think they would find it hard not to replace an air con pump or a starter motor because of a remap.

I’m just worried that car that worth £85k is then worth £60k because it’s been remapped

I think that's exactly what they might do. The problem is that you won't know until you claim.

Exactly. It's different in the first 2 or 3 years when the manufacturer has to prove the mods were at fault to reject any warranty claim.

After that you're basically running an insurance policy and if the terms state "no mods or no payout" then you'd be mad to modify the car and also pay for the extended warranty.

It may well stigmatise it if you come to sell it.

Some may like it, but most will be wary that it has been tuned to be driven harder.

The market, in general, prefers factory originality - unmolested.

Yes your right I made an error renewing the warranty really. I think one of the reason I did it was so I didn’t start modding the car as I have a bit of a track record at it 😂
