Bit of a change around with my cars afoot...and was wondering what the latest view is on the 997 Targa? (Have spent plenty of time searching and reading up, but thought I'd ask for more/updated views).
Are issues with the roof mech' overblown (quite often the case on the 'net I find)?
I'm after a C4S - 4wd as the weather can get crap out here and I may off load my RS4 as part of the change around. 'S' as...why not for the extra power and different stance.
I like the idea of a targa - the glass roof appeals. But a coupe would be fine (convertible is a definite no).
Been mooching at the classifieds for a little while. Quite shocked how expensive they are for what they are, but hey ho. This one keeps catching my eye:

Not keen on the wheels (easily addressed), and definitely didn't want another black car. But everything else about it looks great and the price is a bit more sensible than most.
Opinions and views across the board welcomed!
(btw, has anyone ever had the chrome side trims on a targa wrapped? They would look much better body coloured!)

had a 997.2 Targa 4 for 2 years. I decided it was a great car, although it could never be a keeper due to persistent leaks from the roof. This was not a car to have without the official OPC warranty. They ended up replacing the entire roof seal, which needed the whole thing being removed at a cost of around £4k...
Lovely car though...
Lovely car though...
Thanks guys
Paddy - it's some of the interior upgrades as well as the engine side that are pushing me to a Gen2 unfortunately. I'm getting old and needy
Are leaks common on them? I really like the idea of a glass roof and know the kids will love that. But if they're a ball ache, then I'll revert to a coupe.

No leaks for me.
I did discover the need to keep the rain channels crap free - but that is common across the range :https://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/42392-an-absolute-must-read-for-all-997-cabriolet-owners/
I have found the Hatch of a Targa very useful feature too...

Hi MurphAre issues with the roof mech' overblown (quite often the case on the 'net I find)?

That's my Targa 4S in the advert! It's been a brilliant first 911 these last 4.5 years, and I am only selling to hopefully fund a 997 GT3. Regarding the roof leaking, as Paddy says, you have to keep the drain channels clear, otherwise, no leaks. If the roof is opened and closed frequently, keeping it greased is recommended. I recall that the internal blind got stuck open once, but that was fixed under the extended warranty.
Becuase the chrome strip is unique to the Targa, I think it's to be flaunted! Each to their own though, and yes, I have seen it wrapped black on another black one (owner from Wales - not sure if he's on PH).
I do have a set of Gen 1 Lobster Claw alloys painted in Turbo Black with a silver rim if you're serious and fancied them instead of the Sport Designs.
The Porsche Extended Warranty runs until November 2019 which I hope gives potential private buyers better peace of mind buying privately than buying from a non-OPC indy - but who knows?
The mileage is fully documented - no short back and sides before the MoTs here. (Where do all these < 30k milers come from?!)
I've dropped the price from the £45k Porsche Club valuation but I noticed an OPC selling a 70k mile, lower spec example for £48k!
If you DM me, I'll email you a photo of it wearing the lobsters and I also have a video of it made by my OPC of it up on ramps at the recent MoT (which runs to February 20th 2019). Also, a Dropbox link showing more photos in higher quality.
Cheers
Windy
I have a 2003 996 Targa (all are 2WD) for which I paid £25,000 in 2010. I thought at the time that I would keep it for a while and buy a 997 Targa (all are 4WD) at a similar age but prices have gone through the roof.
These are great cars and the concept is terrific, a large glass roof which can be opened and closed at any speed, unlike the current version. No leaks into the car although there are water stains on the internal lining. You may find a few rattles or squeaks though and there are things to be done for those.
I have had problems with the roof and these started at about eleven years old with general slowness cured by cleaning and lubricating although I don't think the latter is a service item. Two years later the problems returned and were solved by the roof repair kit sold by Porsche followed by new roof motors. In all £3,800 and I don't think this is a DIY job. In fact your regular guy may blanche at the prospect. Obviously a PC will sort things out and a good independent too.
So here we are at 15 years old and I still love the car and the roof and would love a 997 Targa.
