How about a more empirical used buying guide?
Discussion
Chaps
I'm a 911 rookie who wants to join in the fun with a purchase of my first car.
I've been looking around on the web and finding lots of information relating to 911's, however the one thing that I'm missing is sort of "rule of thumb" empirical buyers guide as to when certain items typically wear out and need to be replaced.
I realize there are going to be lots of variables, however it ought to be possible to build a statistically accurate (Min Max Mode Median) analysis.
If everyone on this site pools their actual experience it should be possible to statistically weed out the random outliers or posters deliberately seeking to subvert the process.
Wonder if a board like this could be used to create real world data in order to produce a useful guide by model using a simple table format.
Perhaps the webmaster could periodically collate the results from this survey and publish a spreadsheet from time to time in the buyers guide on this site?
Example
911 996 C2 - 1st Registered Work done & when completed - mileage - vehicle age at time - Cost if clearly identifiable.
911 994 C4S June 2003 - Replaced exhaust rear box 78K 144 months - £800.
Thanks to all for all the various interesting posts on this site - Am enjoying being a virtual 911 owners and looking forward to my first purchase and actual experience.
Cheers
Colin

Nice idea but I am not sure it would work as a lot of people like to replace and upgrade stuff even when they dont need to.
If you want to get a good picture on 911 maintenance and what work will need doing and when it would be a good idea to have a chat with a few independent dealers first.

some people can make brakes last 40k miles or even 60k some last 5k some people ride the clutch some don't
some do short runs killing exhausts etc some do long runs never have exhaust issues.
same with top mounts, condensers, tyres, Rads, Coffin arms, Dampers etc etc.
Some people change parts after a fixed time, some wait till they fail. I see people with 60k org dampers I would have changed them or had a rebuild by then.
I follow a lot of bouncy cars out on my travels , a lot of people run worn dampers, bushes, pads to the metal etc etc
what you want to see on a 10 year old car is a nice history file of parts spent, because we get into the £15k refresh if nothing has been done.
