In the somewhat distant past you would have the oil changed at 1000 miles, in fact manufacturers insisted on it . Today Porsche says 20k miles, they must believe this is ok as they would hardly want premature engine failures ! Any thoughts/experiences ?

I will be having an oil change at 1000 miles, this is something I always do on a new car. There is no way I am going to start to use the full rev range with the "running in" oil for another 11,000 miles (the cars service indicator shows the first service due at 12,000 miles).

1,000 mile oil change for me also, 50 to go! I’m with Skyway on this.

I’m in a similar boat - any particular reason you guys are changing oil at 1000 miles rather than say 500?

And will you use all the revs after that or wait until the suggested 1800 miles (that feels a long way off).

I've always changed the oil at 1000 miles. On our latest one the service manager assured me that there was no need. I even tried to argue the point. In the end I decided not to as he convinced me. He must be right as why would would he turn away service work if his opinion wasn't correct?

I received the same advice as Rob, probably from the same place wink , but had oil and filter changed at 1000 miles anyway. £317.99 no doubt a waste of money but makes me feel better.

Running in? Yes, I followed the instructions in the handbook read but now at 1900 miles that is all behind me and Oulton lies ahead on Friday cool

I'm sure if Porsche thought it was worth doing they'd insist upon it and charge accordingly.

Given today's modern oils and tighter tolerances I can't see the point in throwing away good money unnecessarily.

Always worth changing if you're going to keep the car for a long time.
I did mine on a GT4 after 1000 miles and was surprised at the amount of metal particles in the filter pot.
Oil and filter change £100 if you do it yourself or independent if you're not confident doing it yourself.

I have always been told the same thing ,no need for an early oil change .
But if it gives you peace of mind then it’s worth it for £300 surely ?
It doesn’t bother me so I won’t .

I was told absolutely no point in doing it by my OPC main technician, and said it would simply be a waste of money.

Sorry but any technician saying that not changing the oil after a 1000 miles of running a new engine in should not be a technician!

Ok, well in that case, the Sharkwerks is going on without further delay. May well try diy as I’m ok with spanners etc, if all goes well I will post some install photos.

Changed mine at 1000 on the spyder. Lots of metallic fines so Im convinced if your in for the long haul its worth it, its the fines not the oil.

Remember these techs merely do as they are told and in reality know very little about oil tech. The manufacturers are the same ones that U turned on everything from cambelts to sealed for life transmissions. BMW on the s54 engine bearings mandated an oil early change or spun bearings.

The technicians answer should be "no harm in having it done' rather than "its a waste of money" if he is asked, no matter what he has been told. I can not think of a single downside to using this answer.

If I interviewed a technician for a job in my workshop and his answer was that it was not worth it, he would not get the job!
