I’m very interested in 991.1 gt3 but I heard that it has problems with engine.
Is the 991.1 gt3 a good choice or should I consider something else such as 911 gts or R8 V10

I really want the 991.2 gt3 but the mark up is too high.

If you are thinking about considering a r8 or a gts the gt3 may not be the right choice for you imo.

all 991.1 GT3's have a 10 year 120K miles 'free' warranty from Porsche
if it breaks, they fix it for free

Some cars are 4 years old already and bum twitchers will start at 6 to 7 years imo.

So while 10 years sounds good, 4 have gone and the last 3 will be tough sellers.
After my visit to the RS day this year and seeing 2 991.1 GT3 with engine troubles I would not touch one with a barge pole, added to the fact it’s PDK any way so no interest in the car in the first place.

An ok buy at £110k if you only keep it sub 2 years imo and you are ok with An automatic.
Tiny market for it now imo. GT market is flooded, normally come April there are zero GT cars to buy, you can buy any model you want now if you have the money and choice.

that was probably my car...

to be fair, if it makes it to 10 years it will probably be ok !

I had a Sep 13 991.1, GT3, did 5k miles including lots of track days and V-Max events. Never missed a beat. Had the Engine fix in Feb 14, did another 10k miles, most on track. Never at any time so much as a squeak. One of the best all round cars I have owned.

Not ot a problem in mine. I truly believe the run in period is important though for pro long trouble free ownership..

Can’t fault this logic. Look at 997.1 vs 997.2 prices because of the engine issues. Although with a much more expensive car the pricing differential could be very big..

I think I’d be asking someone like Harlech if they think there’s a fix they would be able to implement for these engines in the future as unless someone comes up with one the other option of replacement engines is not funny out of warranty. The other problem is you buy a GT3 to “drive it like you stole it” so the engine does take punishment and they undoubtedly get driven very hard.

My Dec ‘14 car has seen enough track days that if its engine were made of chocolate I’m confident it would of melted by now. Like Apolo’s it’s never missed a beat. Despite all the doom and gloom not every 991.1 GT3 engine is bound to fail. It’s still a minority of them. The 10 year warranty should put any immediate concerns to bed. Basically if you’re in the market for used 991.1 or already an owner I’d positively want to be stretching the engine happy in the knowledge Porsche are going to give you a brand spanking new engine if the worst was to happen. I actually believe it’s a win win for the 991.1 for the foreseeable future. Obviously as the cars get closer to the 10 year limit that argument changes. But after 8 years-ish of use I would have thought most if not all the vulnerable engines would have let go and been changed out at that point.

Personal view that will no doubt get slated. C’est la vie.

No one slates views, :-). Some issues are wear though like the lifters, so unless people put the miles on buying a car with 20k might start misfire at 25k , it’s ok saying all these cars are fine, but atm most are low miles.

The market is still a bit mad in my opinion. But, given that we're all doomed to die and none of us know when; and Porsche have stepped forward with a bullet proof 10 year guarantee (having hopefully learned from the disastrous way they miss-handled the 996/997 debacle); I reckon if you can find a decent spec and price there's no strong reason not to go for it.

If you still have concerns about being able to rely on the engine, perhaps consider a 991.1 GT3 RS? Perhaps better informed contributors could advise if these engines are blessed with less inherent risk? If so, the market appears to be offering RS models for round and about the same as a 991.2 GT3. In a few years time, perhaps with a little sanity market correction, I suspect that the RS models will pull out a significant gap on depreciation (or lack thereof) over the GT3's - .1 and .2.

I could be wrong; and I could be dead by then; so what the heck, have a think and go for it!!

I do agree with this. No-one knows for sure, not even Porsche it seems. Most of the engines that have had the fault seem to be relatively low mileage so does the fault manifest quite early if it’s going to happen at all or are we all sitting on engines where the clocks ticking. Any one know how many engines have had the DLC problems? Be interesting to know percentage wise what the numbers are, and how it compares to other versions of 911 engine issues there have been over the years and how those cars are perceived, reliability and desirability wise today. Would help to give some perspective on the current car.

I bought a lovely 991.1 clubbie in January. I did quite a bit of research on the engine “issue” and was absolutely satisfied with the very low likelihood of it happening and the outcome if it does (ie perhaps a new G series engine).

I noticed when I was doing my research that on PH it’s a handful of the same people saying the same things.... but what carries a bit more credence is the actual owners on here who also track their cars regularly.

FWIW - I’ve had 3 Porsche GT cars and only my lightly used 3.8 RS Mezger engine has needed a full rebuild... I was surprised for sure but these things happen and Porsche were impeccable.

Anyhow. Don’t be put off - It’s a great car and I love hearing the engine sing at 9k revs.

My 991.1 GT3 has been v reliable, no different to other Porsches I have had - its never missed a beat. The usual misinformed BS from a one or two posters on here - also coincidentaly the ones whom don't have and have never owned a GT3 :roll eyes:

The fact is that Porsche offers a 10 year warranty on the 991.1 GT3 - this is the longest warranty ever offered by a car manufacturer. This can then be extended for a further five years to 15 in total. If a car has any issues, they will have surfaced by this point. Porsche has confirmed that a very small percentage perhaps 5 - 10% of cars may be effected. Porsche has stood by every car that is effected with no quibbles. What more could you ask for?

I would suggest if the OP is serious, then they should get over to Rennlist where there is much more information from owners and Porsche themselves which will give confidence.

My thoughts precisely. I've done over 10,000 (reasonably hard) miles in 2 x 991.1 GT3, 991RS, and 991.2 GT3, and have never had any issues. You are quite correct that its the same old people coming on here predicting doom for these engines - Interesting they've never actually owned the cars they profess to have a great opinion on, so their views should probably be taken with a pinch of salt.

Porsche must be fairly confident with the longevity of the 991.1 GT3 engine if they are willing to offer a 10 year warranty....

A ten year warranty is far cheaper than swapping all the engines out again, it’s simple maths.

And unfortunately, the 10 year warranty is already half-way through its term on many early cars....

Rightly or wrongly, the engine “issues” (in a few cases multiple), have been enough to put me off moving on my GT4 for the 991.1 GT3..... I accept I may be entirely wrong about the robustness of the GT3 motor, but the reported 5-10% engine failures are enough to put me off....!! Shame— it’s otherwise an awesome car— but I also need to think about selling it on in a few years time (without engine warranty) and it could well be a hard sell at that point....

For someone who’s willing to take a risk, they could well be getting the GT bargain of the decade.... wink

Good thread here:

http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=126699&sid=81...

Personally not sold on the engine design as it’s ultimately flawed, and whilst the engine warranty is reassuring, I’d be p1ssed if I got stuck on a track day, then had to be without the car for 4-5 weeks. Confidence is an important part of ownership for me, and that would nag away at me.
