Can anyone recommend what battery charger to buy that can be plugged in to the cigarette lighter on a 996. If that is even an option on such model. My guess is the Porsche one is just a rebranded C-tek?

Not sure on the 996 whether the cigarette lighter socket is live or not so you might need to connect to the battery itself.
Either way CTEK MXS5 - around £60 from Amazon and all the connectors there you could possibly want.

I believe only 996 MY02 (???) onwards had a live socket with ignition off.

I have the CTEK MXS-5.0. Great bit of kit, restored a dead battery back to full health.
I use the supplied battery terminal leads, permanently connected to the battery and simply pop the hood and disconnect from the mains before i drive.

I second Coco!
Got the MXS5 with all the leads and it's great.
I added the 2m extension which allows me to fit the tails to the battery (a very simple job) then run the cable down the bonnet shut line and out by the front light.

Mines a 99 mk1 and the cig lighter isn't live with the car locked.

Second point... if you use the technique mentioned above with the longer cable, you can 'store' it up near the windscreen, which allows access to charging, even if the battery is completely flat. Saves taking the 'chopped Allen key' approach!

I have a couple of Aldi ones that I bought years ago. They've been great.

I use the croc clips and attach to the jump starting points in the engine bay.

CTEK 3.8 works fine for me. Fits nicely on the bulkhead behind the spare wheel and is hooked directly onto battery terminals.

Mx5.0S on my 996.1 2001, fortunately my cig lighter is permanently live so I use that to connect as it's easiest to use & hardest to forget to remove!

Keep an eye on Amazon, think I paid less than £40 for mine, offers come up quite often.

I have a 2003 996 TT and cast another vote for the CTEK via the cigarette lighter. I only drive about 1K miles per year (I know!) and the CTEK has always kept my car charged.
