Morning, some first post advice that may have been asked before but here goes......

I brought from new a 991.2 GTS which I love and is more than enough car for me to drive (weekends only) Trouble is I have a real urge / itch for a GT3. Being new to the brand I thought I would just be able to offer to spend my hard earned cash and a dealer would sell me one, little did I know about the crazy allocation process.

So, couple of options -

Swap the GTS for a gen 1 GT3 (possible main dealer to build up enough “points” for a further build slot?) Gen 1 GT3 from non main dealer, there are a few knocking around.

Wait till later in the year to see what happens to prices of gen 1 and gen 2 see if they soften a bit and just enjoy what I have

Pay over the odds for a gen 2 manual (my dream car) and keep it forever as its cost so much.

Now I know im on a GT forum but would a gen 1 feel special compared to gen 2 GTS? Different I guess? Only road use no track. If i went PDK would I even tell the difference between a .1 or .2 GT3?

Thoughts please?
Thanks

I went from .2gts to a gt3 as have quite a few on here.
The gt3 is a more exciting ‘rawer’ experience .
That is not necessarily a better thing if you want to use the car as a daily. You can ,and I do (although I have a proper daily I seem to be only driving the gt3 at the moment )but there are compromises (and I specced mine for it to be as useable as possible for me) .
Ref the pdk gen1 /gen 2. Yes I thought a big difference because of the engine .I found in the gen1 that it didn’t seem quick unless you were smashing the redline ,the new engine is more enjoyable more of the time and makes a world of difference ,but if you dream of a manual don’t even consider the pdk .

I bet the gen1 drives quite different to .2 GTS.

It’s not a DD just weekend so i suppose i am looking for an event. I think I would only take a gen1 if it helps me get a future GT slot. I just can’t seem to justify paying over the odds for a gen2. For example if you paid £175k now you’d never see anything like that back in a couple of years would you? Surely they’d settle where gen1 is now £115k to £140k. But i guess a manual gen2, now that would feel special every weekend??

I guess the tech in the Gen 1 GT3 and the overall feel of the car would feel slightly dated having had a 991.2 GTS?

Just a consideration.....

I had a 991.2 GTS last year, and have swapped it for a 991.2 GT3 PDK. I loved the GTS, it really is a great car, but the GT3 is on another level of excitement and involvement. However, what the gen 2 GT3 has proven to me, is what great value the gen 1 3.8 GT3 really is.

While the new 4.0 engine is indeed a little more characterful, and the new PASM mapping has made the ride a little more compliant, we are talking really small increments. I completely understand why people want to pay overs for the latest car, but honestly, when you'll be screaming out of a greasy 2nd gear corner pulling 8,000 rpm in the gen 1 car, scrabbling for traction, I don't imagine at any point will you wish you'd paid another £50k for the latest car...!

If you really want to spend £180k, I'd seriously consider a 991RS (a bit more noise and drama, and a more urgent turn in). Alternatively, just get a Gen 1 GT3, and use the other £50k as a big deposit on a Carrera T - I've had mine a few weeks and love it...!

I also had a 991.2GTS coupe last year and swapped it for a new GT3 last November..I also spent four days at Silverstone PEC driving both gen 1 and gen 2 GT3s back to back with the GTS..
The torque on the GTS is pretty addictive and if coupled with PDK and RWS probably quicker across country than either GT3..Flat out on a track however the tables are turned and either GT3 is in a different league to the GTS..A lot of this is down to the Cup tyres and 380mm f/r steel brakes which can handle continued hard tracking without going off..The steel brakes(pads) and Pirelli Pzero tyres on the GTS are incapable of sustaining hard track work...i managed to burn through a set of pads and tyres in no time at all on track whereas the GT3's were still pretty fresh..
The gen 1 GT3 is IMHO the bargain and still feels bang up to date and in some respects more exciting than the gen 2..The gen 2 feels a lot more torquey below 5k revs however above 6k there's little in it..One gripe i have with the gen 1 is it has a larger diameter steering wheel which makes it feel less wieldy than the gen 2..
I agree with Iwan that the sweet spot at £120k is a well specced gen 1 GT3 especially with the essential Bucket seats and Clubsport..The new 10yr warranty on the engine makes it a risk free buy now however i would try my best to get one with the latest G series engine which is proving trouble free and slightly sparklier to drive apparently..

Hi,
Drove a GTS for the weekend and a great car but nothing close to my 991, GT3.1. The exhaust note on the GTS I preferred (believe it or not) over my 3 but that’s where it ended. I was desperate to get back to the 3. The car oozes drama from the CS to the “coffee grinder” engine noise and the box is so quick.
Just sold my 3 for an RS arriving end of May and hoping for a similar experience to the GT3.
Good luck.

Thanks for that, is it the 14MY that would have G series? Didn’t realise there was 2 types. As a non track driver I would probably look tor one without buckets, there are a few around. The brakes wont be an issue on either popping to Sainsbury’s and back on a Sunday!!!

Possibly right, but I have a decent high tech DD SUV full of stuff I never use so don’t think it’d worry me.

I’m sure in my hands I’d hardly notice the difference between gen1 & gen2 in PDK. If i could find the right spec touring then I’d be really tempted. If not maybe a gen1 plus a Boxster for Mrs as she’d love one of those. Plus would score some brownie points as gen2 plus boxster is a no go.

A colleague of mine has just swapped his 991.2 C2S with a 991.2 GT3 Touring. After he had driven a friend's 997 GTS he fell in love with the naturally aspirated engine again!

I do wonder sometimes when i bought my 997.1 gt3 new and it was quite straightforward to buy - it did not have PSM and while PASM made it useable kinda as a daily though gearbox needed to warm up the laclk of PASM on the 996 gt3s meant only people who really wanted a hardcore track car bought GT3s

Now with all the modern driver aids etc supercars are almost without compromise so yes why not get a GT car.

The fear of getting it wrong has gone. As is the pain of a bone hard ride. Add in amazing residuals (kinda produced by the former) and its no wonder. I used to think when i saw a GT car there would be a real petrolhead behind the wheel compared with the other marques. I dont get that feeling anymore.

The ride is still very firm , it’s a long way from comfortable ,but significantly better than previous models.
