I have been looking for a car for what now feels like an eternity...I have about 55k to spend and I am not "normally" this indecisive but i have flip flopped from a poverty gen 1 997 (saving some cash) to a maserati gransturismo to a Nissan GTR to now a 991 which i think i have zoned in now but my new dilemma.... do i get a 991 carrera S with its refined fresher looks/interiors etc or do i go for an older 997.2 turbo which just looks timeless and fat.

I am going to be using the car as a commuter but only up to about 40 miles a day and this may change when it will just be parked up most of the week. Got two tiddly winks so having the backseats will be useful if i need go anywhere with them.

Although my main objective to get the right car and whilst it is not a major concern, i obviously don't want be with something i can;t shift if i needed to (which is why i was put off by the maseratis)

Thoughts & please help!!

991.1 Carrera S IMO.

They're lovely and in terms of residuals perhaps even better than 997 turbo going forward. Probably cheaper to run too. I don't think you'll get as good a 997.2 turbo for £55k as you will a 991 Carrera S for that money.

You’ll struggle to find a 7.2T for 55k unless an extremely high miler. As a reliable daily a newer CS is probably a better option.

fair play - thank you for your thoughts....

I guess I was looking at a couple of 997.2 T @ ~60k so i thinking stretching myself or getting myself a bargain....but your points are noted - I might be asking for trouble with cheapest higher miler turbo ...

A higher mileage turbo will more than likely be a better buy than a low mileage one. From speaking to various experts they all say these cars need to be used.

However as others have said you will struggle to get 997.2 turbo for your budget. Even £60k is a push. You could get one like mine, but then you would be looking at an older, more dated car. Another vote for the 991 from me.

I think the 997.2 turbo is the best looking car in the 911 range right up to the present time...it's sheer class compared to the more aggressive lines of GT cars and the more recent 991's. However if your thinking of a daily or a car for regular use the 991s is a great tool. When I went from a 996 to 997 I missed the rawer feel of the earlier car...but did enjoy the extra speed ...when I went from my 997 to 991 it felt a similar jump...more power & speed but slightly desensitised. ( I also considered the 997 turbo but as a daily thought a newer car the better choice) .Between a 997 turbo and 991s....take the newer car every time...for a daily car The 991s has all the comforts needed and fast enough to be exciting when booting it. The turbo wins on overall size as the 991 looks and feels a much bigger car ...it's a hefty budget so I would have an extended drive of both and try to be critical .....however the rocket ship performance of the turbo could be too much to resist...good luck with your choice.

Thanks guys for your feedback - good points i didn't necessarily think about...an extended drive in both may be needed but as so many of you have suggested, think the 991 may win out as the smart choice.

I use my 997 Turbo S as a daily driver. I arrive at work every morning with a big grin on my face, and i arrive home every evening with a bigger grin on my face.

I got lent a 991 Carrera by OPC while they were servicing my car, drove it from Bristol to London. I liked the switchable exhaust but missed the turbo rush and prescence of the 997 Turbo.
