1.2 GT3 rear wing change to Touring/standard spec
Discussion
Hi all
I've been following the 991 GT3 story for a long time and reading all the great PH threads. I like to row my own gears so wasn't interested in the .1 cars and just missed out on a GT4 allocation as a i'm not a serial Porsche buyer.
The .2 manual is really up my alley but again out of reach from my dealer but then came the Touring which to me is the best 911 yet.
So now the market has cooled (but Touring's are still out of my budget) and I have an opportunity at a average spec .2 manual GT3 (its also white so definitely not my colour choice but nothing a decent wrap can't take care of) and I was wondering what it would take and how much it would cost to change the rear wing/decklid to Touring/standard specification. It can obviously be done as its the same bodyshell but not sure on costs as there are a panel, induction, motors and electronics plus any other gubbins to sort out. Then if its really expensive, it could take it into Touring costs for a car which is neither fish nor fowl but can be converted back to wing spec if needed.
I'm not worried about the slightly different splitter spec that Touring's get as I wont be going on an autobahn!
What do you guys think? Worthwhile or an expensive folly?

I think the cheapest/most realistic option would be to do it without the Touring’s spoiler. To do that I think would be serious ££££ and quite complicated! Maybe go for some kind of ducktail to replace the wing directly ? Maybe talk to RPM as they do ducktail kits for 997’s ? That would be relatively cheap and reversible. The 991.1 with the ducktail looks great. Although your issue with that is you’ve still got the air scoops.
Wouldn’t be surprised if someone on Rennlist is already trying !

I'd expect it to be too expensive to do if you plan to fit the correct electrically operated rear spoiler, given the parts and wiring etc required. Every loom is bespoke, so there's a lot of wiring to add and ECU to mess with. An OPC couldn't do it, then you're left with a modified GT3 that no-one would buy from you.
Just buy a Touring.
Just buy a Touring.

I was lucky to get a Touring (amazing) but regret speccing 918 seats instead of 4 Way seats, which I find more comfortable. I asked about putting some 4 way seats in to the Touring. The estimate from OPC was ........
£20k!!!!!!!!!!
It's a tricky one isn't it. By rights... the Touring probably would be best with a Comfort spec and regular seats... but can imagine the 'pressure' or expectation to have the buckets.£20k!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sat in OPC Reading this morning and there is a 991.2 GT3 in GT Silver outside for sale... its basically a winged touring... Manual, Comfort Spec - i.e normal seat - £154K with 4000mls - Probably 15-20k over list.
Things like swapping seats used to be straight forward and relatively cheap - parts swapping used to be a big part of the Porsche vibe. For engineers by engineers.

The word Touring gave a clue how to spec it I would have thought, still imo a pointless car without rear seats and Porsche named it wrong lol (imfo)I'm sat in OPC Reading this morning and there is a 991.2 GT3 in GT Silver outside for sale... its basically a winged touring... Given that a touring could not be specced with rear seats, could one have specced a cage?
I love how that 991 GT3 RS looks in that picture above without the picnic table, just need to colour code the outside edges of the lower section of the spoiler and it would look even better!

Could just go for a 991.1GT3RS Touring as comes with a cool "ducktail " already so just 6 bolts undone ... wing off and Touring spec with cool retro look .

The RS decklid without the wing leaving the ducktail is a great shout
. I found 1.2 version on eBay but its £14.5k and the seller says they are €30,624.38 from Porsche - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-911-991-1-GT3-R...Food for thought though. I think a fixed item like a ducktail is going to be the most cost effective and can easily be swapped back to the standard wing. I'll have a look around the interwebs and see what else is available

I'm doubtful it'll be as expensive or tricky (technically) as some are making out.
I agree. Maybe the world has moved on since I modded a 996. But honestly how hard can it be? Bolt on a new decklid and fiddle a bit with the wiring. A proper indie will come up with a cost effective solution soon enough.Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
