Just half-heartedly specced up a 992 S. No manual gearbox option, no narrow-body option, 21-inchers on the rears. Just not interested - even if I wanted to indulge myself in that sort of car price territory.

Was the 991 the pinnacle of 911 development? Great looker (arguably better than the 992), manual available, 'only' 20-inch wheels, not overly electronic/digital, narrow body if you wanted it. End of an era.

Depends how you look at it, I suppose. 997 was the ultimate of true Porsche DNA and a fabulous drive - apart from the tyre roar... and depending on model/spec can be starting to look a bit tired now. 993 has an awful lot going for it of course... but given their age now you, can't use them in the same way as a more modern 911.

Discuss (if you feel like it).

I would concur. Only thing that would have been nice is if the 991 dimensions were fraction shorter and narrower. Then again being tall the additional interior space is nice.

I understand what you are saying but for many, the latest is the greatest.

Nothing to discuss Maxym, I’m with you 100%
Personally 997 Gen II model as good as anyone probably needs as a road car, loads of character too IMO.
993 and 991.1TT up there too in desirablility stakes for me. 991.2 3lt turbo leaves me cold.

Are they not going to release manual versions later ?

But I do agree.
Why are cars getting longer and wider - is it so they can lap the ring faster ?
In the real world, on a normal road, they need to get smaller. Even in my 997.2 I wince a bit on the back roads.

I’d have to give my vote to the 997. The 991 is probably the best looker but the 997 was my favourite 911 to drive. Best proportions. Best sound. Interior looked and felt Porsche. 992 interior is awful. I don’t think you can fault a 991 GTS (n/a or turbo) but there is just something about a 997 that I still crave. It’s like.. the 991 stopped being a 911 and started being something else (in a good way i suppose) but if we’re talking best all round 911, it has to be the 997 for me.

The 991.1 had a great engine especially in Gts form but was let down Imo by the manual box (would have preferred a six speed as per GT) and early models as mentioned EPS.
The 991.2 T could have been a great car irrespective of engine if yet again 6 speed box was fitted and a bit more weight saving.
For me the best 991 has got to be the R or gen2 Gt3 manual of coarse and either full fat or touring model! Otherwise 997.2 (manual)

At the end of the day the best 911 is the one you drive and not everyone else's opinion.
Happy Xmas I am off to the Pubbeer

hung onto my old 7.1RS and will keep it permanently. Compared to the 991RS it is more go-kart like - rattly Mezger at idle , very direct steering , trick handling in the wet , no stability control. Will keep both cars and see how the 992 develops. Not sold on the styling or interior.

There are pros and cons to each, depending on your own personal preferences, but I think the 9x7 and 9x1 are peak Porsche.

9x2 models are all worse in my eyes.

I think to compare all the 911 generations you somewhat perversely need to look at the basic model as that the one that is probably the truest reflection of that generations character. I think if we’re talking Carrera I don’t think the 991 is the pinnacle for me at least because it feels more like a GT car than a Sports Car in Carrera form.

But I suppose that’s where Porsche have been very clever with the 991 in its many different guises offers possibly the broadest range of experiences of any 911...not because the RS models are any more hardcore than other enerations but because as well as being hardcore it’s also the probably the best GT that any 911 has ever been.

I love the 997.2 GTS - size, sound, steering, looks - past this, all non GT 911’s are really great grand tourers but not 911’s imho. ( I include 991.1.2 GTS in this camp also) 992 is a Lux cruiser not a real 911to me frown

I firmly believe that the 991.2 was indeed the end of the 911 as we know and as a consequence the 992 has crossed the threshold in terms of weight and size to qualify as a sports car..IMHO.
The DPF is a firm sign that the NASP days are numbered and with this in mind it looks like i'll keep my 991.2GT3, 981 Spyder and 458 Italia for a very long time..The rat race for the latest 'must have' GT car is well and truly over for me at least..

Merry Xmas to all my P'heads online buddies..

Disagree.

The 991 started off with early stty electric steering and a notch underdeveloped 7 speed manual, progressing onto turbo engines.

The 997 has more original credentials going for it.

Bit early to be concluding the 992 hasn’t surpassed the 991 surely.

Agree Andrew ...... still few have driven it ..
The one thing sadly is the silly little shifter ..... the best aspect of the 991 was the PDK , especially in GT3/RS format . You cannot shift sequentially anymore .

i might be biased lol, but the 991.1 GTS is surely the pinnacle (non-GT cars). The .2 cars might be faster but they all sound rubbish.

Like others, not convinced on the 992. The interior with the little nubbin thing is rubbish, and they've put some of the buttons on the touchscreen! noooo.
