About to sell my cayman 981GTS and looking at either a T or a (2wd) GTS. Seems about 10-15k between them,,, is the GTS worth the extra, both would be manual.

.. also is gearing different ? Looking for midrange shove but don’t want to go full Turbo

Lots of love for the T but I’d have a GTS. Both are very spec sensitive.

Good question.

I started the ‘Anyone for T’ thread a 100 odd pages ago.

Drop me a PM.

Yeah a T is more spec sensitive. It has to be manual and quite basic.
If you want pdk and a glass roof etc it'd have to be the gts.
Personally for me the T has all the performance required for the road. If straight line shove is an issue, again maybe the gts is more your bag.

The GTS is a 911 GT car. Comfy, typically high spec. Often with PDK. Manual cars don’t seem to sell quickly as most people wanting a GT want an auto

The T is a 911 sports car. Limited but carefully selected options makes the difference. Manual, RWS, lightweight glass, T interior (and probably rear seats make sense)

Depends on what you want. Lux or sports

Since 2014 I have had four 991's;

991.1 C4S X51
991.1 GT3 Club Sport
991.2 Turbo S

and currently 991.2 T Manual

Having had the 991 Turbo S .2 for 12 months I came to the conclusion it was not engaging enough for a weekend/occasional drive. It was fine if your journey had a purpose, but all too often I found myself just driving very fast without any real sense of speed and the car only required you to steer it and it handled anything else you threw at it. On UK roads you cannot really use any of the cars real potential and you rarely get the chance to push the car otherwise you would be doing ‘lock-up’ speeds…..

I used my Son’s manual car a few times and really enjoyed the involvement it offered so decided I would try a manual as a weekend/fun car and continue using the SVR for longer journeys and daily driving. I had read a few articles on the Carrera T and that seemed quite a good fit with my requirements so contacted my local OPC who had a slot with quite a short build time so I placed the order. I set myself a budget of £100k as I didn’t want to go too mad on the options otherwise it sort of misses the point. I added all the ‘T’ bits and a few options only made available on the ‘T’ and particular other models like the lightweight glass from the GT2 RS, RWS & no rear seats or sound deadening. Although not quite in the spirit I did add a sunroof as I enjoyed it on the Turbo. First impressions are very positive and it does not feel lacking in power given it’s the basic Carrera engine. The drive is very engaging and I love the uncluttered look.

Really? The GTS is a bridge between the S and GT3 models; its absolutely not the comfy alternative. The default spec on a GTS hardly shouts GT-car lol. Its faster, lower, louder and shod with alcantara inside and a widebody sitting on centrelocks.

If there is such a thing as a GT 911 then its a Targa.

Sorry , I completely disagree - I’d call a 991.2 pdk GTS exactly as Carhabit says smile

Its interesting you've gone back to a manual. Is the T more engaging than your old GT3?!

Well I guess your both wrong smile I think any 911 would be hard pushed to be classified as a GT car but if you did shoehorn it into that classification, why on earth would the GTS be most like one? Surely a softly specced Targa would be more fitting.

As it happens, I thought we were talking about 991.1 GTS vs 991.2 T RWD coupes as per the OP not wanting a turbo (cant blame him, the turbo unit is fast but lacks soul).

Ah, ok , Fair enough; I agree a Targa is even more Grand Tourer than a GTS - However I guess everything’s relative - I own both a 911.2 GT3 and a 991.2 GTS.

The GTS is a very capable car ; it’s quick but is a super lux tourer compared to the GT3 - in truth most modern 911’s are just this - they are definitely not “sportscars” - However the GT3 , is every inch a 911 IMHO.

But as you say, maybe I’m wrong and am not qualified to comment. smile

On the public roads at sensible speeds a manual 991 is more engaging than the 991.1 GT3.

On a track it's totally a different answer, but I don't get to spend much time on the track at the moment.

991 GT3 Touring would be the best of both worlds, but not at current prices.....

I have had a GTS manual, which was good, I now have a T which I use instead of the GT3 over the winter.
I would recommend the T, it has a special feel, like a modern 993.
But they are both top cars!!

I drove a 991.2 Carrera at the PEC recently....first one I have actually driven, have to say my thoughts were it feels very much like a GT car compared to my 997 GTS and 991.2 GT3....feels a lot more “grown up” than the former and certainly a lot “smoother” than the latter,
When pushed the 991,2 Carrera feels like a Sports Car but when you’re not “on it” definitely feels and drive like a GT for me.

Now obviously if you drove a Bentley Conti and a 991.2 Carrera back to back the 991 feels like a sports car....but in 911 terms for me it’s a GT. And yes a Targa would be even more so. That’s no bad thing though! Car I’d definitely like to try is 991,2 GTS Targa

Morning, hope you had a good Xmas.

Completely agree , most modern 911’s feel like luxury GT’s to me - brilliant cars but very refined, fast and comfy - nothing wrong with that; as a car to drive all day long, they are brilliant. However, a 991.2 GT3 especially in manual form feels “alive” at all speeds - a completely different proposition, it’s visceral and engaging. I must admit every time I drive mine I think “why aren’t all 911’s like this” - to me they’re perfect. smile

Interesting parking my T next to my GT2RS.

The T looks quite a bit smaller, narrow bodied and seems to sit a bit lower too whereas the huge rears on the RS make it sit up more. The wing on the RS just adds to the effect.

Is this at all true? A sport specced 2wd gts with buckets etc is in why way a GT car vs a sports T? I think you mean aGTS can be many things

But a sports specced GTS outperforms a T and is basically a T+

My OPC GTS demo was Manual, Buckets, PCCB’s all of which add to the intensity of th3 drive and I would say make it a Sports car more than a GT. Most GTS’s are Comfort Seats, PDK and Steel’s though so in my mind that’s a GT. Very different drive.

The more I read this the more I think of.... chicken curry.

All are pretty damn great... some a bit spicier than others... some come with plain rice and others with more fancy bits attached which may not be necessary but to some maybe ‘must haves’ ... but hey you can’t really go wrong with a chicken curry when you fancy one.

The only thing worse than a fresh chicken curry is one that goes cold and congeals or is frozen in time to be enjoyed sometimes never... so get your preferred flavour out the garage and enjoy.

Happy New Year to you all.
