Dear All

Been an eye watering days with my OPC...

My car is in for the warranty inspection and a few fixes. One of the fixes is that the rear demister hasn't worked since I got the car (even though the OPC investigated last year and said it was working).

They now tell me that it isn't working (surprise!) and that the rear demister fault isn't covered by the Approved Warranty because it is "glass" related and want £1500 to fix it. I have checked my terms and conditions and this is not stated anywhere in the "exhaustive" (their word) list of excluded items.

Anyone else with experience in this?

They also want...

£1200 to replace all the exhaust bolts which have corroded

heat shield replacements for £667

Rear discs and pads £1527

Are these prices reasonable?

Oh f**K.... I now have a choice... Pay my tax bill, feed the dog or sort all this.

Thanks for advice
Jack

They are ridiculous. My exhaust bolts were rotten as hell and cost £400 inc parts. Brakes can be done for half what you have been quoted too. Go to an Indy. If you fit original parts warranty it should not affect warranty.

WRT the rear screen it may be worth calling some other OPCs and see if they would consider it a warranty item. Also call the warranty number and talk to them. They actually passed me on to the person who handles the dealer's warranty request when I challenged a 'not covered' item last year - this was BMW.

I'd also ask them to send me some photographs of the various items and see what they look like myself.

Disks and pads are £650 in parts using OEM parts. I know because mine need doing and i priced them up yesterday, significantly cheaper if you don’t need to use Porsche parts. YouTube changing 911 discs and pads. It’s stupid easy. Even if you don’t have any tools you could spend £150 on decent tools to do the job and still be quids in.

Porsche would not offer the extended warranty if they didn't make money out of it...

In other news, at least you don't need the rubber grommet which seals the rear wash/wipe arm in the glass. If you have one of those leaking, I'm told the parts for the 997 (assume also the same part of 996?) has been on back order for weeks.

Any decent auto electrician should be able to continuity test your rear demister and find the cause, which is most likely a break in the element. This can be fixed using a conductive glue - you can DIY this if you have a meter or test light. OPC 'technicians' just replace components and are charged out to the customer at huge hourly rates. How much is a rear screen?

I do feel your pain - posts such as yours remind me that I might be better off with 'poverty Pork' and doing my own work, rather than the other plan for a 997 C2 which is under warranty.

If they want to do £5k of work on top of normal servicing at every renewal, then it becomes a very expensive vehicle to own and run.

It's also a pain that they fit such poor quality bolts and clamps to the exhaust - if I do pick up a 997 in Spring that'll be one of my first DIY jobs.

January is not the best month to have such issues - please don't neglect the dog!

update, Porsche now say that the rear screen will be covered... Phew.

Have had a quote from another respected indy for the other items £1650 as opposed to the £3397 from OPC!!!

Interesting you mention the grommet/washer.. mine is not flush with the glass and although it’s threaded I can’t get in to ‘catch’ to screw it back down.

Has yours split or have the same issue as me?

As for the demister issue, it is attached to the glass but isn’t it a delegate electrical component?

Mines a GT3, so no wash wipe, but the indie who looks after my car mentioned it, apropos of the fact we're waiting for some cup friction plates for the diff. Quite a few spares seem to be on back order.
