Nice video. Really miss my 996GT3 and that was standard. I often thought it would be interesting to modify it but in the end I took the easy option and bought a 991.2
This guy has done it the right way though by going to Manthey and starting with a clean sheet. Car sounds good too!
Doesn't Spa look spectacular too

Do the 4.0 and 4.2 last with track abuse? I hear much better to stick to 3.8. Heard rumours the fabled 997 4.0 RS suffered engine issue but only a rumour?
4.0 L fine with factory crank and Mahle pistons and liners.RS Tuning do various capacity Mezger builds, no doubt expensive, but safe to assume they'd be reliable. I think they use Capricorn components. Sharkwerks seem to have built a good few 4. + litre engines that have logged many miles without issues.
Factory built 4.0 997 GT3 RS had issues with throttle butterfly screws coming loose and ending up in places they weren't supposed to be ...

Should be nippy indeed and would have expected the hot lap to be a lot lower than 2.57?

In the video he does say it was his first time at Spa...but yes, not a representative lap in a car of that performance level.
In a std powered 996 my best has been circa 2:47/48. I've seen a lap in a 4.0 996 at sub 2:40 (think it was 2:37)...so this car, driven in anger would be in that territory I would think.

Like a lot of us, he's an enthusiast, not a professional or competitive race driver. Fair play to him. I'm pretty sure the car would be capable of a lot more.

Agreed. I watched the video and though it was the sort of lap I'd do. Tidy, but not spectacular and not fast.

Agree you on both counts there Digga and I resemble your first one!

He clearly loves the car, driving it and enjoying it. Doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. Knowing what some Spa GT3 regulars can lap at (see La Source's post above), I guess I was just expecting a brutal lap in the low 2.40s.

I've heard on the grapevine that the 4.0 RS cars can exhibit a premature wear problem on their main crank bearings which is showing up at 20-25K miles but as Porsche are keeping it quiet it's hard to get solid info on the exact reason; mis-matched shells is one theory I've heard. Hmmm. I saw these pictures on the Porsche Owners UK Facebook page and it did make me wonder...Taken at OPC Swindon last month:

Interesting, it's the first I've heard of issues with the 4.0 since the early intake problem. I guess it doesn't help hardly any cars are actually being used very much anymore too.Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
