Hello

I bought a 2004 997 C2 about a year ago. It has 58k miles on it. It’s an amazing car that puts a smile on my face everyday. I love it!

Generally I’ve had no problems but....before Christmas when the temperature started to drop overnight the instrument cluster started to become temperamental in the mornings. I use the car everyday.

Basically, apart from the speed dial, none of the others dials work on start up. The digital displays, other than the middle one (mpg), doesn’t work either. Neither do the internal indicator lights - though the actual indicators on the outside do work. It also comes up with two fault codes. Then it will all suddenly come to life and the fault codes seem to disappear.

The time it takes to wake up depends on how cold it is outside. When it is really cold it might take 15 mins. If it’s only a bit cold it might take only a few minutes. If it’s quite mild the problem doesn’t exist. The temperature is an obvious influence.

In the summer there was no issue at all and I anticipate that when the weather warms up in the coming months the problem will go away until November.

The other possibly relevant point is that the key has to be turned and held for a few moment to start the car.

I have taken it to a specialist recently for a service and he really knows his stuff. He says the cause is not obvious and may take some investigation. He has investigated the fault codes and there are no problems with this items highlighted. He thinks it all may have something to do with the ignition switch because the car didn’t start for him a few times. I haven’t had that problem but then I suspect I may have got used to holding the key in the turned position for longer than should really be needed.

Anyway, I’ve scoured the internet and forums and I can’t find any reports of anything similar. I’m going to try changing the switch. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, did you find out what caused your problem?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Just read my own message and noticed some typos (which I blame the iPhone keypad for). One of them is mpg - it should say mph
