Hi all, based on my extensive googling I know this has been covered...very boreing ;-)...but I need help.
I’ve found what seems to be a lovely high spec manual 997.1...it’s £29k on 77k and it’s just had a OPC engine rebuild and is on sale at one of the good guy independents. I’ve spoken to Porsche who did the rebuild and the independent, both very very good and have given a honest overview of history. I just can’t get out of my head I could buy it and in a year the same thing happens. I know I can get an OPC warranty for 2 years but that’s 2k and I know it’s £29k not £39k as it’s a gen 1 but I’m flip flopping from whether it’s a good idea or not....

I like it but I’m an impulsive buyer...so want to buy it but wonder if in 6 months i’ll flip to worry of a 10k bill......I can afford a gen 2 at £43k I’ve seen but i’d rather not (family guilt)..

Hmmmmm

What sort of age is it?
I bought a 997.1 c2s just over a year ago that had an opc rebuild 15k miles ago and have decided to lightly modify it to make it more alive.
Was previously after a gt3 but the roads around where I currently live are poorly maintained so spending £70k on a car seems silly.
Will use & enjoy the c2s and continue to lightly mod it each year.car
Currently having folding buckets & ipd fitted, plus mini wheel and cruise control.
Great cars if maintained an d driven properly.

IMO buy the car you really want,I don't think that you will loose any more on the more expensive car!

You’re already worried enough to ask , so it will forever bug you , the Gen 2 seem to be holding their prices extremely welll so I would expect you would get most of your cash back at resale time anyway,

This is exactly the worry I had with the 997.1 engine, options are find a gen1 that has had a Hartech rebuild or buy a gen2.

I bought a gen2.

I bought a 997.1 on 49k with bore polishing on the bores, and very slight scoring on no. 4 piston.....uses no oil...no ticking noise and best of all NO Worry

It had new set of Carrera 2 wheels and P Zeros...had all new discs and pads....new rads...beautiful condition...is the colour i wanted with my must have sports seats....and Sport Chrono as a bonus ..........I would be more worried buying a car with a dodgy history/crash damaged...than a bit of bore scoring.

Aren't the Gen 1 cars better driver's cars than the Gen 2?

If it is a keeper, buy it, enjoy it and when the time comes , rebuild it.

I loved the m96 engine in my c4s and it drove faultlessly for the 4 years and 20k miles that i owned it. But i was always worried that it might go pop on me which took the shine of it! I changed to the 997 as i disliked the headlights mainly, and for peace of mind it had to be a gen 2. Expensive yes, but well worth it imo.
Good luck with the search

My Thinking exactly....i will rebuild in the next year or 2 .....engine rebuild, new coolant pipes, new clutch , double din pioneer unit with pioneer speakers...suspension refresh with Bilstein B8 / Eibach....and something like the Design 911 Exhaust/plenum/throttle body/induction package.....for about the same cost as a nice Gen 2....except the gen 2 will have slightly tired suspension etc.

Heres the naughty 997.1 C4S in question.....do Porsches get any better looking than this....not in my utterly biased eyes !!!

Hi if the opc replaced the block, with new pistons to replace damaged ones, then this repair will be covered for 2 years parts and labour by Porsche warranty.

If its the car for you then just buy it.

Choose, there is no mention that the repair was done under extended warranty,he does state that he CAN purchase a warranty if needed

£14k difference to for an engine rebuild IF the car ever needed one , look hard enough and you can find a reason not to buy anything .

Enjoy the experience for the most affordable price you can.

I found many reasons on the web not to buy my 3.2 coupe , 993 coupe , E46 M3 , Z3m coupe etc but i did have have fully enjoyed them all , given the zero depreciation on most they have also cost very little to own , certainly less than a more sensible choice .

That could have been my exact old car, even had a Pioneer head unit. Don't think it is though as my speakers were Focals
Loved that car

Ah the famous Porsche GB 997 1.5 turbo you promised me then welched on?! Just kidding smile

I can understand this. In many ways a C4S Cab a sharper car to drive than both 997 turbo and Boxster S. I found the chassis sharper and the throttle response far nicer in the C4S.

Gen 1 C4S the best buy 911 out there at the mo IMO at £30k for a lovely example. Wish I was around this Summer in the UK to take advantage frown

I think in terms of spec your 997t was unicorn. Very rare to find a car with manual, PCCB and factory LSD hence a good one to tuck away. Colour was rare too although I wasn't too keen on colour myself - yes car was bought by a friend of mine. C4S cab really surprised me. Driven over my favourite b roads back to back with 997 turbo and the C4S cab flowed with the road far better - turbo by comparison especially stock a bit too quiet and a tad stop start on road so frustrating. Think 250bhp-350bhp perfect for road use. More and more people and even manufacturers realising this with cars like the Alpine and 4C being made. Truth of it is though even an old 997 C2 knocks the spots of most things for ease of ownership and a fabulous driving experience. Annoying even 10 yrs old 911s still best in class!
