OK, so I had a long awaited test drive today, got the keys at 1:30, returned at 4:30. Missed the opening night due to work commitments.

This is my first 911, first Porsche, I'm not a driving god, just a normal bloke, who's doing OK and wants his poster car on the drive. Drove a 991.2 GTS back in October before I put my money down. Was hoping for April delivery, but a house purchase has gotten in the way, and now I want 2nd September. Previous cars, Elise, Mini JCW, loads of company cars, so I'm not in a position to compare it to previous 911's etc etc.

First impressions - the cabin is smart, really smart. I like the gear button, its a button, not a gear stick, get over it and its tactile and metally feeling. I'm into tech (part of my job), but embarrassingly (after turning down the 10 min familiarisation brief because yeah, I'm a bloke and I don't read manuals), it took me 10mins to sort the seats and start it. Thats good, many many many things to play with. But you select the 'car' icon, put it in sport, open the exhaust and off you go. If you are into ultimate configuration of everything, this is brilliant, loved it, even though frustrating at first. If you put it in Sport Plus, the car seems to vibrate and the tone changes, but I'm a wuss, so put it back into Sport.

Motorway slip road, give it the beans onto the M5, yeah its quick, insanely quick, and its reasonably loud. I'd be disappointed if I didn't have sports exhaust though. If I had my way, it would be much louder, but it does howl, and there are some wooshes and parps in the background, fake or not, I like them. The steering, so direct, absolutely brilliant, back to the Elise (not really), but no play whatsoever, total confidence, feel every bump, bit of gravel, blast around the Malvern Hills down to Ledbury (if you know it) was sublime, totally connected with the car.

Looks? All you see in the side mirrors is the huge wide rear wheel arches and I LOVE THEM, everyone on here seems to moan its getting bigger, heavier, and yeah I get that, but this thing has massive presence, far far more than any other 'normal' 911 I've seen. A huge step up. My test drive was a dark grey / black with black wheels so was very understated. I'm going yellow. With Crayon/Sportex, which looks very very cool in my humble opinion (they had Sportex on their showroom model)

Maybe this is a kid in a sweet shop view, but, wow, what a car. I've looked at 997's, 991's (very nearly bough Carrera T last year), but this is just a very very lovely bit of kit.

Great write up...there is definitely something great about the look as a 911’s rear arches in the wing mirrors. It’s iconic. They really are great cars, long time since they made a bad 911. Great that you are spec in good your car in the colour you think it demands/deserves, too many people get worried about resale....its your car and spec it for you!

I’ve just test driven and have a slightly different outlook on it.

The car is very capable, quick and comfortable. I tried the 4S and it’s predictably sure footed, and has huge amounts of traction. Seating position is spot on. Interior I thought was a letdown. The piano black is a nightmare to keep looking tidy and the space lacked any real drama - partly because the spec on the demonstrator was dire. Black without contrast stitching. The sunroof was the saving grace.

Launch control was staggering. Really didn’t like the power steering plus, turn in was very brisk, and it took me a while to calibrate. Car didn’t have RWS and didn’t need it for road driving. PDK was predictably good. Power delivery was ok.

The sound was totally lacking. I’d gone in knowing it would be quiet, but was genuinely shocked at the lack of aural cues. Engine almost silent until c6k rpm, then it’s ok. But that puts you in license losing territory very quickly.

I was really looking forward to driving this, but didn’t really gel with it at all. I will have to look at the n/a 3.8 in either the last gen GTS or GT3. For those committing to the 992 though, it’s a phenomal car.

I felt the same. Ended up going for a 991.1 GTS (GT3 not an option as I need the rear seats), the sound and character from the NA 3.8 is a different league to the 992. I’m sure other people want different things from a car, but it turns out the engine means more to me than anything else.

Absolutely - it takes all sorts etc. Glad you’re sorted with a car you want though. I’ve not driven the n/a cars yet, look forward to hearing the difference. Redline have a stunning Targa, anybody know it?

In many aspects I can see why the new 992 and indeed any new Porsche (post addition of particulate filters and box etc ) are desirable. HOWEVER, the lack of aural engagement and entertainment is imho a reason to pause . If you offered me a new 992 minus the new interior etc but with the same aural character as the prior 991.2 GTS or 991.1 NA I’d but it.

That unfortunately is not the offering, so faced with a new shiny 992 without a major must have of aural engagement over a 991.2 GTS for eg it’s easy to decide. The GTS 991.2 or 991.1 it is.

The emission regs have forced Porsche to make a car as aurally engaging for a Carrera S or 4S as they could do, but in absolute terms it’s not aurally sufficient.

Have to agree, new vanilla 911’s are getting worse from an engagement perspective IMHO - noise , size , looks - I think the 991.2 is a much nicer looking car and more “911 like”. I’m sure the 992 will make an excellent daily driver , a lovely GT car, but every iteration makes them less pure and takes them further away from what I think a 911 should be.

Hugely subjective I know and only MHO

Agree, it seems the days of that lovely Porsche flat 6 N/A howl are over for all but the top GT cars, big shame. I’ve just got into a 997.2TT as a stopgap between a C4S cab and finding another cab with desirable engine, colour and spec combo, looks like it will have to be a late 991.1. At least the shove of the turbo makes up for lack of noise and I like the narrow 997 package.
Will test drive a 992 but dont hold out great hope for liking it as I’ll a noise + still a buttons man (Blackberry user paperbaglaugh ).
Again “Hugely subjective I know and only MHO” too.

I am very interested to hear why you picked the 992 CS over the 991 T? I was in the same situation and just wired a deposit for a new T after seeing the 992. The T has less power but the look and soundtrack did it for me.

Very nice car the T - I have to say if I was depositing on a 911 I’d go T over 992 everyday of the week. The T is more than quick enough for spirited road driving & you can add engagement with the manual box, narrow body, sexy, fun car.

This is the problem I think with progress : each iteration gives you more of what you already have in abundance (speed) and less engagement - I think “direction of travel” on vanilla pork is going firmly in the wrong direction for me. However the GT cars are still amazing things, so that’s fine. Oh hang on ...... you can’t buy them unless you buy loads of the vanilla stuff and even then theres no guarantee - not easy this Porsche thing anymore frown

Not an overly positive review in EVO this month.

A ‘does everything well, but’ kind of a review. In order to unlock the talent of the car you have to be going very, very quick.

I suspect that this is a symptom we’ll see more and more in the next few years. Everything getting more and more competent, but somehow losing the soul of what makes a car special for want of a better description.

Still a lovely looking thing though.

Fell like I’ve got to defend the 992 now, but I really don’t. The T was great, but it just didn’t feel like a £100k event. I didn’t gel with it, it didn’t feel properly quick, didn’t feel or look like my dream 911. Even though I liked the idea of unticking rear seats and other stuff.

992 absolutely does, and the wide rear end, the way it goes off the lights and the steering, the tech inside, just feels like a super car event.

But I do want more GT than out and out Sports Car, a Cornwall to Scotland cruiser, an Alpine road trip kind of car. And call me shallow, but it needs to look cool as f@@k on the drive to, to remind me why I bother to get up and go to work everyday.

And my car choices (not company cars) have been smaller = better, chose an Elise over a Boxster back in ‘99, chose a Mini JCW over a Golf R back in ‘16. The 992 for me was just a massive massive step on.

Each to their own. What I do agree with, it needs the exhaust sorting and the unnecessary legislative cr@p removing to give it a real voice, which I’m sure it has somewhere under the various filters.....

I think this is very true but also it’s not just a Porsche thing...every now and again when cars like the GT86 (a few years ago) and the Alpine (currently) come out people rave about them because they’re that sense of a step towards in driver involvement but delivered by a decrease in weight and/or grip rather than an increase in power and grip. I guess the T was Porsche’s attempt at this but they really could do with giving us a mainstream model that goes further in that direction! From what owners have said/reviews I’ve read a car set up like the 911 R’s chassis was but maybe a bit less power so it’s not “GT”....that made in proper numbers would be fantastic!

I’ve not driven or heard one yet so I’m getting a bit concerned about the comments regarding poor exhaust noise.. I understand they must put the new filters on but I’m curious as to how Mercedes make their 4.0L bi-turbo engine sound so good even with the new filter yet all other manufactures seem to be struggling. Makes no sense.
