991.2, the best looking modern 911?
Discussion
Now it has happened again...
After seeing the first 992 in the flesh, I can't help but to look at the 991.2 and think "Wow, that is the best looking modern 911!".
This is meant to be a thread about styling, and not the drivetrain.
So when the 991.1 came out, I thought the 997 is the best looking modern 911 (modern meaning the water cooled era).
An during the whole production time of the 991, I always prefered the 997 (997.1) to any 991 styling wise.
I have been driving a lovely 997.1 for the past two years, but it never felt this old to me until I saw the new 992 in person.
My car has aged 10 years in 10 minutes, to me at least.
I strictly prefer the facelifted 991 to it predecessor. It's exactly all the updates details they got spot on imho.

There are the slim LED strips ans the DLR ring with the 4 dots that look very smart. It looks much cleaner than the 991.1.

I really like black plastic surroundings/vertical fin on the side of the radiator openings. The front bumper with the "V" also looks great.
BTW I like the base 19" of this red one the best.

I think the vertical stripes of the engine lid is the single best styling detail of the whole car!
Looks so much better than the 991.1 with the horizontal bars (those look good on the 996/7 cars).
Also the 3D LED rear lights are superb.
In general, the LED lighting on the 997.2 doesn't work, imho. While the front DLR are ok, the rear ones are all wrong! They look like an afterthought and not as if they have been styled with them.
On the 991.2 the LED lightning looked a bit dated, but they nailed it withe the facelifted cars!
The spoiler looks great!

The interior looks very clean and elegant with it's slim console and the superbe cupholders from the 997.
Much more elegant than the American sized one in the new 992. (I don't know about you, but 90% of the time I'm driving I do so without a drink.)
I have to say that I have been looking at 991.2 cars the whole weekend.
Also having had a rather stressful journey in the rain with heavy traffic while trying to listen to a playlist through the FM transmitter I'm still using, I fantasized about sitting in the PDK'd 991.2 C4 with Apple Car Play I have seen at a nearby Porsche dealer
I'm not at the position to buy such a new 911 atm and I still love my 997.1 C2 very much. In an ideal world I'd keep the N/A, rwd, manual 997.1, upgrade it to be a real drivers car (I dream of building my own GTS / Carrera T / soft GT3 based on the last manual, hydraulic PAS 911 there is) and to have a 4wd, turbo, PDK with a longer wheelbase as an everyday, GT sort of car.
But back on topic, I know I could have written the very same thread 8 years ago when the 991 came out.
And when the next 994 (is that what it will be called??) comes out, probably I will be saying the same all over again.
But today is today, so my question is, am I the only one who thinks the 991.2 is the best looking modern 911??

I had a 997.1 C2 too and it was a good looking car but I do think the 991.2 eclipses it. The 992 looks good too in my eyes, however, it's such a pity it's grown again. Does Porsche know the size of our roads and car parking spaces??
Yesterday, having done a 6 hour round trip to Exeter in my 991.2 T taking in some country lanes, there is no way I'd want a bigger 911. I'd also have to add there's no way I'd have wanted to have driven my 997.1 C2 on such a long drive. So the 991.2 wins on looks and drivability.

Agree 90% OP. Only 90 because I think the 991.1 looks terrific too. IMO the 992 is a cartoon of a 911 and the haunches at the rear look dreadful. Those haunches echo (of course, it's Porsche doing their heritage thing) one of the sporting classics from the past - and I think that looks crap too.
991: there hasn't been and there won't be a better looking 911. IMO.

I find my Carrera T very similar in character to my 997.1 C2S in most areas including refinement. Also consider the 991.2 to be the sweet spot. The rear of the 992 is quite offensive and rather bulbous. This will date rapidly imo.

I prefer the way it looks, the way it rides, the way it turns in, the sounds it makes.....
I used to have a 997.1 C2S and I thought it was lovely - until the 991 came out - when it looked ancient. However, I have to disagree on the 991.1 - it's still super classical Porsche. Less fussy than the 991.2, although the 992 is less fussy still.
For me though - it's the noise of the naturally aspirated engine - the last of it's kind. To some extent this dominates. And because mine has the LED lights - with the Halo rings - it looks better than the 2nd gens that don't have them.
I still want a 992 next year - but it'll be a cost equation and less of a style judgement.

For me I think it's all about the immediate impression the first time you see each iteration i.e. 996, 997, 991, 992....and for me out of those it's the 997 that wins although it clearly could be argued to had the easiest job in replacing the 996 which is my least favourite 911 of any era.
I think the 991 is a fabulous looking car now but the first day I saw one I thought it looked a bit bulky.
My order would be 997, 991, 992, 996. I've only seen a black 992....need to see one in a lighter colour (for some daft reason Porsche GB allocated my OPC three black cars as showroom demo cars!)

I prefer it to 992 but I've said this about every new 911 since 1989
Actually when 993 came out I thought it was stunning but as time passed went back to preferring the older 911s
I feel much the same way, for a long time I thought the 993 was the prettiest iteration but now like the older stuff possibly because the Singer is (to my eye) stunning. If I had to pick an original Pork it would probably be the 997.2Actually when 993 came out I thought it was stunning but as time passed went back to preferring the older 911s
I don't mind the 992, but the rear is fussy, it's a tad too wide and I don't much like the flattened wheel arches. All that said I will be placing a deposit when the manual is confirmed, which I guess says it all about 911's.

The 992 looks much better in person than in the pics IMO, especially the rear. I had a look around one today when I was at Reading and one drove past me on the way back on the M4 as well.
If you approach the 992 for the first time with an open mind and no preconceived ideas, then it looks good IMO.I never thought it looked good in pics until i saw a few at my OPC a few weeks ago.In the metal it has a real menacing appearance but ultimately less pretty compared to the 991..The 992 looks more masculine and will suit the full fat Turbo and Turbo S much better than the 991 IMO.

I can’t agree that the 991.2 is the prettiest modern 911 - to me it ties with a 997.2 GTS - both are stunning looking cars - especially in 991.2 GTS & Carrera T form.
Looks are 100 % subjective and are a very emotive subject, so if you love the 992 please look away;
So, the 992, where do I start; it looks like someone’s taken a 911 and attached a bike pump to it and inflated it ; the wide rear and front arches in combination make it look really large. The rear end has very little definition - compare the lines of the rear of a 997.2 GTS to a 992 - the 997 has a lovely bum, nicer than the 991.2 GTS, but at least both shapes have definition and “form” ; the 992 is basically a slabby undefined wedgy lump in comparison.
The front of the 992 is better, that is until you get to the mass expanse of horizontal plastic.
The 992 is very colour sensitive IMHO - dark colours work much better as they blend with the plastic & as such, mask it.
I’m not saying the 992 is an ugly car, it isn’t , I just don’t think its drop dead sexy like the right versions of the 991.2 / 997.2 - it reminds me of a big Audi TT
Sorry

- The 'original' 911 (63-73) - pretty, simple, classic lines. Perhaps a bit fragile looking
- The 'impact bumper cars' (74-89) - more purposeful, classier without the rear spoilers. Bumpers not to everyone's taste
- The 964 (89-93) - ah, the 'jelly mould' era. At least they found a way of hiding the spoiler
- The 993 (93-97) - oh no, who squashed the lovely front wings?
- The 996 ('97-04) - no longer a 'real' 911, but more grown up. Not quite right, especially the 'runny egg' headlamps
- The 997 (04-11) - much tidier, but starting to look more serious
- The 991 (11-18) - This is starting to get big - but aren't our roads getting smaller, or at least more congested
- The 992 (19- ) - This is now looking huge and very technical. Do we really still call this a '911'?
Yes, colours do make a difference, but the design features I still love about the 911 are the slightly upright front windscreen, the sweeping roof line through the rear screen and engine grille, down to the rear bumper, the front and rear quarter lights, the horizontal front wings, punctuating the sloping bonnet, the slightly reclining front headlamps, the gently flared wheel arches and, of course, the Fuchs wheels. But most of all the beautifully compact dimensions.
And definitely sans over-sized wheels, spoilers and aftermarket stickers

Although I have never owned one, I always thought that the 993 was the best looking 911 of the lot. I have seen the 992 and sat in it- the rear will take some getting used to.
I still have a 991 and a 997 - from the beginning I thought that the 991 was a better looking car than the 997 though less engaging to drive.
