Random noise coming from new GT3
Discussion
Morning people
Having recently picked up my gt3 I am getting used to all the noises you can hear due to the lack of sound insulation which for me adds to the drama. However, I am getting a ting sort of noise, like metal hitting metal from the rear left when I go over a biggish bump or if the wheel momentarily lifts off the ground. Does anyone else get this or should I be going back to Porsche?
By the way if anyone is looking for a good road trip I can recommend going to Tan Hill (highest pub in Britain) in the Yorkshire Dales and the head to hawes via reeth and then down towards Skipton. Epic roads and pretty quiet even on Sunday.

If you have a club sport it’ll probably be the cage which is quite normal - either way for peace of mind I’d ask your dealer

Indeed. Sounds like you did the Buttertubs pass, which is a bit too lumpy bumpy for my recent cars. Hawes to Gearstones and the Ribbllehead viaduct, however, is one of my all-time favourite stretches of tarmac (B6255). It's well-sighted, challenging, and when tackled from North to South reveals a fantastic view of the viaduct shortly before hanging left for the B6479 towards Settle. A slice of heaven in Gods county.

Hi Oliver.
1st, I am not back on the forum, this is a rare post to offer the answer to the cause of the issue.
This is a known issue on some cars and IS NOT the cage as most have said.
I am sure you have got used to the twang and pings of having a cage already.
It's the rear spring coils, the end of the spring is hitting the closest coil. A known issue by Porsche BUT NOT a recall.
On the plus side there is a fix if you have the coil hitting issue which it sound like you do, depending if you want it fixed or it's just due to hitting massive bump and you are ok with it as is as it might be a one off for you.
It's a new set of springs, but all that's different is some shrink wrap round the one of the top coils to stop the twang of the coils hitting each other.
hope that helps and is clear, your OPC should have a white paper for it one hopes (but I bet they are also clueless when asked and will say "they all do that sir" ! )
As always in production later cars from Jan 2019 will have shrink wrap hose already fitted to the top coil.
(most must have been built by then one would have thought ) !!!
I will not be posting again on PH in general, but in rare cases when people want advice and I know the answer when other don't I will post now and again.
the service info for your OPC is 37/19 ENU 4272.
cheers
David

Normal suspension noises. Have it on my 991.2 3RS as well.

David thanks for your input and help. I will get in touch with Porsche and see what they have to say. It happens quite a lot as it does it even over relatively small bumps especially at speed. I didn't think it was the cage and its specifically coming from the left rear side. 1st, I am not back on the forum, this is a rare post to offer the answer to the cause of the issue.

I had this same noise on my Clubsport GT4 and it drove me insane. OPC said all ok and nothing wrong but the harsh mechanical twang/crash noise was actually putting me off from driving the car!
I investigated and removed a section of the NSR cage to eliminate the cause most people suggested and the noise was still there so I knew it was the suspension as opposed to the cage but I then sold the car so never chased the ultimate solution. OPC weren’t interested in offering anything.
David has obviously gone further and I believe his theory could be 100% on the money.
Don’t live with it - it’s unacceptable and annoying and should never be there but too many people just accept it as ‘a GT3 thing’ and ‘Normal’ and ‘they all do it’

I have a similar noise from my .1 GT3 CS
had it into the dealer twice to try and resolve
trouble is, that all the roads around the dealer are exceptionally smooth & don't show the issue !
polar opposite of the roads around where I live.
In their defence, they did spend several days actively trying to replicate the noises, but ultimately failed.
Mine sounds more like a rear heat shield rattle when going over 'rippled' road surfaces - doesn't need huge bumps to show

I have uploaded the Porsche service sheet for the issue, Print it out and take it to your OPC just in case.

More signs of penny pinching from Porsche. Poor show. cheers

For those not familiar with what David is talking about, check out this image, the spring on the left has it's outermost coils wrapped in clear plastic to stop the individual coils touching each other when coilbound.
I'm guessing it would have cost all of 50p to fit during the spring manufacturing process, now it'll cost Porsche AG considerably more ...

I'm beginning to think 911R may be God. We all showed signs of ceasing to believe in him. He left us, and is now sending us a sign to test us. If we all respond to show our faith, he will come among us once again.
[With apologies to anyone this offends; I'm an atheist so taking the piss of religion is one of my values.]
And good to see 911R is OK.

I get the same on my GT4 (not a clubsport). It's very predictable. Aim for a bump or depression (like a drain cover) and I'll get a boing from the left rear. But try and do the same with the right rear corner and there's not a sound.I investigated and removed a section of the NSR cage to eliminate the cause most people suggested and the noise was still there so I knew it was the suspension as opposed to the cage but I then sold the car so never chased the ultimate solution. Please keep me updated as it was one of the main reasons for me moving my GT4 on as it drove me mad!
