991 GT3 questions
Discussion
Hi all,
I hope you can help me. I am close to buying a late 2014 generation 1 991 GT3 from an OPC, but having read a few things on here about these I now have a few questions...
- The engine seems a bit "clattery" when it's idling. This stops as soon as a few revs are applied, and it really sings (howls even) up above 6k revs, but is this normal? It also seems to do this more when it's warm, when cold it's a lot less mechanical. I thought it might be a heat shield or something, but the engineer at the OPC said it was normal.
- Are the engines really made of chocolate if I don't track the car? I love driving but don't do track days, so I am not sure if I should be worried? The car has an F series engine (engine code MA175 F01001?)
- Should I insist on a rev range report? This used to be the case when I bought my 997, but I am not sure if it applies now. It is a clubsport car with low mileage so I'm assuming it's been a track toy
- Apart from the engine, is there anything else I should be checking? I assume that with a 2 year OPC warranty most things will be covered, but it would be good to know if I should check anything else
- Has anyone bought one of these from an OPC recently? if so, are there any discounts to be had on the listed price? The prices do seem to be coming down on a few of the cars now, with the cheapest at about 100k, but some are still up at about 118k.
- Are there any recommendations on insurance? Any specialists I should try?
Thank you!

This all normal don't worry - I thought the same with mine, put your foot down and enjoy.

No they are not despite what a few people on here might believe. It is covered under Porsche warranty in the very unlikely event you have an issue. Drive it and enjoy with the extra piece of mind of Porsche backing.

Not needed on a PDK as you can't over rev them

111 point check by Porsche will pick up anything needed - main thing being brakes (esp if pccb) / tyres

I got some discount on mine but Ithink it depends on the car, how long they have had it, is it SOR, what is needed on it to get it through the 111 point check etc.

I am with Admiral whom are quite basic but cheap, Mannings are supposed to be good if you want trackday cover included but a bit more expensive.
Thank you!

@gd - a rev range report is an easy print out for the OPC and they will already have done one, no reason why they shouldn’t share that with you.
The mechanical sounding engine noise you described does sound typical of the car.
Worth asking them if it’s the original engine or been replaced already, either way you have a warranty on it to 2024. Depending on how long you intend to keep the car, maybe moving it on a couple of years before that date might be sensible.
Worth asking if the brakes are steel or carbon, that makes quite a big difference in price.
Lots of GT3’s for sale in general so you have nothing to lose by offering I would say 3-4% under asking price, that is a serious offer and they might deal.
Overall they do look good value compared to 991.2 GT3 in PDK format, let us all know if you pull the trigger on it!

Thank you both, that's really helpful,
I didn't realise you can't over-rev a PDK but given the electronics involved that makes sense.I will ask them for the report anyway, The Porsche warranties are giving me enough piece of mind to be honest, and I ran two 996's for six years in total and a 987S without the engines detonating, so i can appreciate that not all cars are as bad as the Internet would make you believe.
And thank you for the suggestions on insurance, I found another threat with a few more options but I will start with these.
