Windscreen on a 997
Discussion
Hi
So I was driving (slowly) down a lane on Friday and a truck lobbed a stone off its rear wheel and I watched it lazily arc through the air until it struck the screen just infront of the driver - leaving a 2inch crack. Doh!!!
So I ring auto glass - and am quoted almost £2000 to replace the screen on my 2009 997. I know I can claim on my insurance to get this lowered but is that a reasonable price for a windscreen on a 997? It seems an awful lot (my last screen replacement was on a 07 merc clk and that was about £300 if I remember right). Anyone know of a recent price for a 997 windscreen?
TIA

Paynewright - I know through the insurance I don’t see the cost explicitly - but the only place any business gets funds is from its customers and so I want to check they are not getting ripped off as ultimately I will be expected to pay!
Oh and the 2k wasn’t for Porsche glass - it was ‘oem equivalent’ !

Somewhere they make you pay. They don’t have a magic money tree to fund stuff from. The only place they get money is from customers. So I want to do due dilligence and I also thought to ask what others have been quoted or paid.
I was wondering to what degree there is a racket going on - if everyone uses insurance to pay then there is a disconnect between the market forces and the prices. This becomes an easy way to skew the market and ultimately disadvantage the consumer.
I’m also hoping to identify the difference in cost between the oem equivalent glass and Porsche branded glass

You are probably over thinking things as the insurance industry has people ensuring the suppliers of fitting services are giving them value for money. Also the price Autoglass have quoted you will be more than the insurance company will have to pay. Just to fully round out the comparison I gave you earlier I went back and looked at the invoice for the work I had done and I was a little high before. Although it is a 993 it is still also a bonded screen and should be similar. 997 screen will be larger so likely slightly more expensive. The price of the screen from the OPC to my specialist was £860 inc VAT. Fitting at the specialist was £215 inc VAT. Then there were some small sundries such as the bonding mastic, rubbers etc which were less than £100. Screen supplied by OPC was Pilkington made in Germany by the way. I was wondering to what degree there is a racket going on - if everyone uses insurance to pay then there is a disconnect between the market forces and the prices. Phone up your local OPC parts department and ask them the price of a new 997 screen if you want to know the Porsche price.

Glassman did my 997. Not much cheaper than the Porsche dealer price, but he was excellent. He came a long way to me, and his workmanship was first class. Whereas I felt with the dealer, I had no control over whether I got an expert, or trainee fitter. I would definitely use him again!
Thanks all.
I called my opc and the 997 screen was 496 +vat and about £200 fitting. Bonding and a few other bits were around £100 giving a total of about £970.
So that’s half the auto glass price for a original screen - why would anyone use anything else?
And I rang Aviva and they are not interested. Very odd. But as they are my insurer I have little alternative as they have subcontracted all conversations about glass claims to auto glass!
I don’t like to see any business not caring this way as it just seems negligent

So will they let you use your preferred option? I’d still be surprised if the insurers pay anywhere near the price you were quoted. If they insist on going to their chosen vendor then you need to either specify original glass (I’ve read the Porsche glass has additional etched markings somewhere) or be prepared to pay the difference in cost.
We had an no fault accident repair done on our family car at our insurers ‘chosen’ bodyshop - repair was OK but managed to cover the car in swirl marks which I’d meticulously avoided since purchasing the car from new!
