Interested in general thoughts between buying a 991.2GTS or the new 992.

I'm thinking that a very well specced GTS about a year or so old with 9K miles at £90K is a good buy and will lose less than a 992 at £112K built to a similar spec.

Thoughts?

I think you’re right....991.2 GTS is a great car, not that the 992 isn’t but a good spec 991.2 GTS is a good buy when it’s over £20k cheaper. I’d imagine quite a few early 992’s have gone to people who will be looking to run them for the summer before selling them too.

Edit - Just checked on the AUC site...there are 22 992’s on there! Blimey.

At least one of those 992s on there is sold, or at least that is what they say when you enquire, even though days later they are still advertising it…

For that money I would be looking at 991.2 Turbo S over any 992.

Not feeling the 992 at all, it’s not very 911 or Porsche imo, bar they pinched the 993 front end and 996 back end ! Switch gear feels cheap and the cars feels more Audi than Porsche to me.

I have no interest in the Turbo S.

Have you driven the 992 or are you just talking about looks or pictures?

I've not driven it yet - only had a look around it and sat in it so far - and I didn't get the same feeling about the interior as you got. The switches felt fine to me and looked good - in fact, all looked very nice to my eyes, although the black plastic either side of the transmission selector looked like a bit of an afterthought. I'd rather have buttons than a touchscreen that you need to look at to touch the right part but they seem to all be going that way. My view isn't influenced by previous models as I've not really considered buying one before now - I wasn't looking with any particular expectations or preconceptions.

The driving position felt great - I've no idea if it's identical to the 991.2 GTS but it actually took me back to my TVR days and felt a better driving position than my dearly departed E92 M3 that this will replace.

I've seen plenty of reviews from people who I usually respect and they all seem very positive.

So I guess your answer to my question would be the GTS then, unless it being water cooled rules it out immediately?

Kidding!! ;-)

Agreed. I’m trying to like the 992 but it’s over styled. It looks under wheeled at the front due to the wider wings. Can’t stand the front and rear PU styling without the SD package. And the interior looks chaotic to me. The mix of new screens and looking back to the pre 996 interiors is too contrived.

I’ve got a 991.2 GTS and have test driven a 992.

I loved it, felt fast, less turbo lag. Wasn’t as loud, does sound different to mine though, deeper sound I’d say.

Love the interior and new features.

Missed the cup holders, and the gear selector is a bit underspecced for me, but it’s quite solid feeling, even if it doesn’t look it.

I tend to buy run out models though, once they’ve perfected it and ironed out all the issues, so I’ll likely look at the GTS.

Thanks for that - exactly the sort of feedback from someone who has driven both that I was hoping for.

I liked the interior and switchgear, which I thought felt fine and operated with a positive feel, although the cupholder situation is a bit odd.

I know what you mean about getting later versions of a car. I'm not sure on the difference in the engines between the 992 and the 991.2 GTS?

Is turbo lag something that is an issue for you in your GTS or is it simply that the 992 is better.

Getting the GTS is feeling like the better option and then maybe move up to the 992 GTS in due course, if it feels worthwhile.

In the 991.2 I remember Harry Metcalf doing a vid of the base Carrera...he said he thought it was the one to have as it was the one where the engine felt the most like a naturally aspirated engine because it’s the one least reliant on the turbo to produce power.

Interesting, but I'm not sure how that would apply to the 991.2 GTS and the 992 S, as I think they are producing similar power? Different turbos?

Had a 991.2 GT3, now going to a 992 S but in fairness I haven’t driven a GTS.

FWIW, for me, the performance and capability of the 992 won me over. I, like many, went to Geneva and under the spotlights was a little underwhelmed with the 992 but once I drove it back home, I was amazed with its ability and soon forgot about trivia like the gear selector, etc.

I don’t agree with other saying it’s much bigger because to me it simply isn’t. It does however feel ‘heavier’, as in more stable, planted.

To feel more sportier, get the the GTS, but you’ll not pull away from a 992.

Also, I know the market seems flooded with 992s, but speaking with my dealer today, they said they’ve pretty much seen most of this years allocation already. I’ve no reason to disbelieve.....

Did 35K Miles in 2 X 991.2 Targa 4 GTS, Family member Still owns a 991.2 GTS Coupe, have done around 2k in it. Drove it back to back with my 992C2s coupe, just to get a feel for it. My views.

Whist the 991.2 GTS is a great car it really is, the 2WD version is brilliant its like a baby Turbo S but without the 4 wheel drive part and all the better for it in my opinion. The 992C2s really does move the game on. The only area in which the 992 falls behind is the sound, even with the Sports Ext. But in every area, looks, comfort, handling, suspension, brakes, Info System etc etc, in my opinion the 992 is big step up. But these are just my views i get we don't all like the same things.

Well that’s not at all helpful. wink A friend recently told me that if I try one then I’ll want one.

If the rain has a rest I might get to try the 992 tomorrow. I guess I’ll need to try a GTS after that as well.

I have a 992S and used to own a 991.2GTS Coupe and agree with what Apolo said..My 992 is better handling especially when turning in and the faster steering makes a huge difference..It feels like it has more of a neutral handling bias and less prone to understeer when driven on track..The 992 i drove at the PEC last week had RAS which was brilliant handling on the short tight circuits..The 992 also rides much better than the 991 with none of the crashiness which affected the latter.
The 991.2GTS is still a brilliant car and every bit as fast as the 992, just make sure that you drive a 991 with RAS..

Thanks.

People seem to be enjoying the 992 as much as the reviewers have.

The 991.2 GTS I’m looking at has RAS, PDCC and PASM.

I'd personally go for a Turbo S or at least consider one if I was OP, @ £90k they are crazy value for money and the new TS will be £200k+

I didn't even see it, although I am looking at the 991.2 GTS if you were referring to a .1.

There are lots of GTS available at the moment and I'm guessing a lot will be press or PEC cars, in which case I guess I'd want to know how many launches were on there, although I presume such cars would have been maintained well...

The 992s are a mixed bunch - some are being advertised that I am told have already sold (but a week or so later are still being advertised), some are priced reasonably and others seem to be hiked above retail.

Nothing to add other than this in red with silver wheels looks absolutely spot on to me.
