Data logging 996 GT3
Discussion
Hi,
I'm trying to get my Aim SOLO DL data logger to connect via the OBD-II port on my 996.2 GT3. Not having much luck, even though basic RPM/speed etc. should be available using the ISO9141-2 protocol, according to Aim's own documentation. Plug it into the OBD-II port, the unit charges but is not receiving RPM or other data....
I've seen a few on here post videos with data overlays, I'm getting a Smartycam GP setup for our racecars this week and would be nice to be able to use it with data via the DL on the GT3 too.
Anyone had any luck? Perhaps others are tapping the CAN BUS via the ECU directly...

The Racelogic/VBox guys reckon that the 996 OBD port doesn't provide data in the right format/frequency or something. Therefore one needs to tap into the CANBUS directly. However I did notice that AIM documentation tends to suggest data is available at the OBD port.
With my VBox I use the induction/clip on cable that senses the CAN signals without physically cutting into it so it is very non intrusive and easily removable with no permanent changes to the loom (and no risk of the vbox unit sending stray signals onto the CAN BUS). I access the CAN bus at the ECU under the rear shelf in the car with my vbox unit mounted on the rear cage. I suspect there may be a CAN cable access point near the fuse box in the driver footwell as well
