Proud Owner of a 997.2
Discussion
Hi,
Been thinking about getting a 911 for 6 years now, initially i gave up and bought a 335i as it was much cheaper but now 997.2s are more affordable and so I bit the bullet and bought my first Porsche last Sunday. There are a few things i'd like to sort out to tidy the car up and hoping some of you can help:
1. The brakes work but not as aggressive as i thought it would be. My wife's Q2 brakes are brutal in comparison... I have checked the discs and seems to be plenty of meat on them, could it be the pads? The car is due for a service in September so will get new brake fluid then. Anything else it could be?
2. I had not noticed when I bought the car but the driver's wing mirror has a crack. Is this a light adaptive mirror? anyone know where i can get a replacement?
3. The front of the car has a lot of stone chips, has anyone had their front bumper resprayed? roughly how much would it be, can anyone recommend a spray shop in the south of london?
4. Ive only driven the car a few times, but sometimes the car seems to vibrate at idle, not horribly but was not sure if this was usual. The revs do not fluctuate, i did some research on this and apparently this is normal?
5. Is there any way i can check the condition of the engine, seems fine, pulls really well but i'm not sure what its meant to sound like. Sounds like a bag of spanners and all sorts of odd noises. Just want to check that there are no issues, i know i should have checked before i bought it!
6. There is a lot on the forum on baby seats, a lot of the info is old and the seats are discontinued. My son is 9 months old and was looking for a front facing seat to use when he was 15 months old, any recommendations?
Thanks for any help

That's how brakes are supposed to be - you decide how much force, not an Audi style servo which makes driving into a wall seem like a gentle experience.Been thinking about getting a 911 for 6 years now, initially i gave up and bought a 335i as it was much cheaper but now 997.2s are more affordable and so I bit the bullet and bought my first Porsche last Sunday. Some of the other issues sound a bit of a worry - if you didn't get it inspected you should get a decent Porsche specialist service it now rather than wait a few months and get them to check it over thoroughly whilst they have it. Get the mechanicals square before you spend money on the cosmetics, such as stone ships and cracked mirrors.

umm, i was thinking that but it seems to drive fine so was not so worried till your message. Will try Charles Ivey, they are not too far from me.Some of the other issues sound a bit of a worry - if you didn't get it inspected you should get a decent Porsche specialist service it now rather than wait a few months and get them to check it over thoroughly whilst they have it. First of all congratulations - it's great that you've finally got yourself the Porsche 911.
My brother moved from a 135M to 997.2 C2 manual early last year, it's a great sports car.
1. As previously commented, many road cars are over-servo'd and devoid of feel meaning a Porsche feels inadequate until familiarisation reveals excellence. However they can be improved - hoses, fluid, pads & discs.
2. -
3. Very common, soft paint
4. Could be normal, perhaps worth a specialist checking for your peace of mind?
5. Most likely normal. A Porsche saying to keep in mind that may help - 'if it doesn't sound broken - it probably is'.
6. My brother recently went through the same, he found a great solution, I'll ask and reply back
Overall, I'd say address point 2, point 3 if you feel it's unsightly, pop into a specialist for p4 - and just enjoy it. Used Pork can sometimes take a few weeks before you relax into it - it will happen!

Hi Cocouk, thanks for the advice, re point 5, i am comparing the sound of a bmw v6 to a porsche flat 6. maybe thats why it sounds so different. Anyway it certainly drives like there is nothing wrong with it. Will look into getting a Porsche check up and maybe a extended warranty. Its got 60K so a higher mileage car.My brother moved from a 135M to 997.2 C2 manual early last year, it's a great sports car.

Thanks for the advice on the baby seat, will drop by Halfords and take a look.
Congrats on getting your hands on a 911. I drive a 997 too and it is a special car. I would ring up a couple of wreckers to see if they've got 997 OEM mirrors for sale. As for vibration and noise, well, I also drive a Lexus and the first time I sat in my 997 it was, err, interesting because in the Lexus sometimes I'd need to look at the tacho to see if the engine is actually on. Not the case with the Porsche and I think your car is fine but just to be on the safe side an inspection at a reputable indy is highly recommended. Hope you enjoy driving it for many years to come.
This Maxi Cosi Air Protect is a great fit in 911 back seats as it has a narrower base than many other fwd-facing child seats:

Use it in mine (albeit 993).

Another recommendation from me. I've used the Maxi Cosi Rodi in both 996s and 997shttps://www.maxi-cosi.co.uk/car-seats/rodi-airprot...

Congrats OP.
Hi - I just bought a 997.2 and have the same mental check on the brakes. They are great once hot - but pottering around and cold they seem to be lacking bite that other cars with beefier servo assist setups have (especially Audi’s that I always found way OTT).
The 997 is a more raw car and yes it chunters and clunks a bit but the purity of the feeling is stunning.
As others say - get it well checked with a good specialist and relax a bit.

Hi OP,
The brakes sound normal. I hsve s 996 turbo and the lack of bite at low speed when I first got it (or have been driving other cars) was alarming. Just give yourself time to adjust.
For a wing mirror try eBay, a breakers, but worth getting the part number and calling an OPC to get a price from them.
I'd suggest you find a reputable Porsche Indie and get them to give you an overall inspection for peace of mind. They should be able to give you a front bumper respray quote.
I can recommend Jaz in St.Albans which is a 20 minute train back into Kings Cross, but sure there are others South of the Thames.

Thanks all for the advice, ive driven the car a bit recently and everything seems fine but have booked the car in for a 111 check with Porsche Brooklands for Tuesday, may get a 2 year warranty also. I'd got the Gen 2 as i'd heard that the engines more robust but you never know what can go wrong.
I'm getting used to the brakes, and watching the fuel gauge go down as i'm stuck in traffic! Note to myself, take Golf when driving into london in rush hour!
Fadfad, i went to your profile to inquire about the baby seat but cannot find a email address there, 'says this 'Sorry - the recipient doesn't permit emails.' I am interested in your baby seat, where are you based? I think you can email me as my contact details should be in my profile...
I have to say the guys on this forum have have been very helpful, thanks

I have a brand new 997 GTS car cover Porsche OEM if you want I’d be happy to let it go for 100 pounds? Still in its bag never been used. On if interested and welcome to the brand. I still miss my 997 gts. I'm getting used to the brakes, and watching the fuel gauge go down as i'm stuck in traffic! Note to myself, take Golf when driving into london in rush hour!

I'd forget the 111 point check UNLESS it's for the extended warranty. In my experience it's just a box ticking exercise. I had my private seller get one done at my expense prior to purchase in 2015 but they missed the stone chipped wheels, ticking the box for these, and later Porsche GB refunded my £216 fee for the 111 point check, plus a goodwill gesture, in view of this oversight and the wheels' condition.I'm getting used to the brakes, and watching the fuel gauge go down as i'm stuck in traffic! More recently, in 2017, the 111 point checklist for my extended warranty confirmed the presence of a tyre inflator (I hand't spotted where it's located) but last month a further check revealed this was missing. In other words they hadn't bothered to check it was there in 2017, just ticked the box instead.
Use your saved money and have it checked over by the guys at: https://rpmtechnik.co.uk
Not too far from you really, and they can arrange a courtesy car. You'll then have a more enthusiastic bunch of experts, with Porsche factory support, looking at your car and advising honestly on what needs doing.
Whilst there for a club meet a while back I asked them to check my brake discs and pads after 40k miles. Armed with a mirror to see the back surfaces they confirmed the precise disc thickness and that nothing needed doing. Just get a nice feeling from them which I very rarely do from a Porsche centre.
