Any love for the base Carrera?
Discussion
Not being one to be swayed by the crowd, I have just got my hands on a 991.2 Carrera PDK having spent a few weeks trying to find some feedback and reviews. Everyone seems to test drive or review the S or GTS but given the nearly £10k difference between the base model and the S (even on used) I decided to go for the cheaper car.
Not sure how much love there is for the base car, and we are of course all different, but I’m struggling to think why you’d really need anything more in terms of speed and general usability. Sure there are options you couldn’t get on the base model, but spec’d up they seem to offer cracking value. Perhaps that’s why the Carrera T is so highly thought of with the additional options available?
Anyway here’s a gratuitous pic, and would welcome opinions. I’d not even test driven these, just trusted that 370bhp and 450Nm was enough...

When I did the PEC Silverstone I opted for a 991 C2 over a GT3 as I’d never sampled that part of the range. It was a lovely car! The engine was great and sounded very Porsche but it might have had PSE. The handling and balance was really we judged along with the available
power and torque. All in I felt it was an exceptionally well judged car and all you’d ever need on the road. The only bit I didn’t rate was the heated steering wheel which I kept turning on by mistake!
I’m considering buying one as rear seats have now become a consideration which my Cayman R doesn’t have.

Cracking cars!!! For some reason the back to basic version offers a purer non-compromised 911 experience IMO. Would like to have one, however manual... I agree with you 350 hps is more than enough! I wonder if the 992 will have a non-S version at all, its taking a bit of time for them to launch that model ;-)
These days I'm thinking an MX5 or 1.8 TT makes sense. Actually, I recall having fun in an Audi A1 1.2 manual courtesy car as I could rev the nuts off it, grin madly, and still not lose my license or grip.
Traffic is so dense and slow and watched by big brother that fast cars are becoming tiresome.
C2 is definitely the one to go for unless you have small tackle.
Great colour by the way... Rhodium?

GT Silver, comes with PSE and a few other goodies and I think it sounds great and looks the part. Someone even spec’d front axle lift which is a bit OTT but there you go.
I’m glad others think they are a decent choice, I was concerned by choosing the lower end of the range I might end up with something a little undesirable but I love it.
Interestingly the manual cars in the OPC network have been hanging around for a while and are getting decent value, but I chose the PDK in the end. Not the purist choice of course but even so.

Harry Metcalfe reviewed the Carrera S....but his conclusion was that he reckoned the Carrera was the car to have. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2yNY8avAi54
Excellent choice, I love it... and well done for having your own mind . I wanted new ( for poor reasons) and I suspect I would have strongly favored the non S had that been in the mix when the new one was launched. Being new to Porsche I did my best to avoid too much Ytube nonsense and ....oh god you can't be serious not buying the WB version and lime lime colour stitching is a must ....and bought what I liked included ignoring almost every suggestion of the sales guy ( who was very good and honest in his opinions ) but one....not t that I ordered basic, I added a fair chunk of money , but importantly got what I had originally envisaged as the car I always wanted. Anyway, its not about me.....your choice is another winner.
i wasn't expecting an awful lot from my new (to me) 911, but i've been more than pleasantly surprised !!
997.2 C2 PDK and i think its a cracking car with more than enough go for the road.... passing is a breeze, its torquey (coming from an E90 M3 anyway) and when you do rev it on a bit it really shows its character. the steering feel is sublime.

I own a 911 and a old S4 and tomorrow pick up a 10th AE mot failure MX% ax a resto
Can’t wait
totally agree - 991 gen 1 C2 here too
country B roads (and A roads) mean more corners and less visibility - so the practical difference between an 'S' or 'GTS' and the base carrera around here is in reality zero. Have PSE on mine and it makes a fine noise when I want it to, hammers down the motorways and A roads as fast as I'd ever need it to, and is comfortable, engaging to drive, fast as f*** when needed, and almost practical to boot. Oh and cheaper to own and maintain, and depreciation same as the more expensive models. what's not to like!
