Morning all,

About to start the hunt for a 911 and looking for some advice smile

I "think" I want a Carrera 2 S over the 4 S but happy to be persuaded otherwise.

- What options are musts?
- What spec is a must?
- Other than IMS and the like what else am I looking out for?
- Newest and lowest mileage or?

My criteria is as follows;

- £30,000.
- 997 onwards.
- I will be using this as my every day car but my commute is only 2 miles (Need to have a car at work so can't cycle).

My ideal would be a C2S 997.2 in dark grey with a very light grey (almost white) interior with the "correct" spec - does this colour combination exist? Am I in budget?

Thank you all in advance.

Seems a waste for a 2 mile commute & probably not great for the engine to never get warm.

Clearly I won't be using it for just my commute. I do c20,000 miles a year and 3-4 European trips.

Non-S?

Less likely to go bang/bore-score.

Hi, you said your ideal would be a C2S 997.2; a Gen.2 car would be better in terms of possible engine problems, ie no IMS to worry about and minimal risk of bore scoring. However, with a budget of £30k, I think it's unlikely that you'll find a decent Gen.2 C2S, you might find a decent Gen.2 C2 for lowish £30's but you'd obviously have to up your budget a bit.

If you go for a Gen.1 C2S, you'll have the possibility of IMS failure and bore scoring so beware; the MY06 and onwards Gen.1 cars have the upgraded IMS with larger bearing, so less likely to fail, but bore scoring is still a risk. With a budget of £30k, I'd be talking to well known specialists such as Paragon in West Sussex and 911Virgin who vet & prepare their cars meticulously; they also offer their own Warranties which I'd recommend.

Good luck, they're great cars.

Me again, I've just had a look at the 911Virgin & Paragon Porsche websites, and they both have a couple of Gen.1 C2S's in at the moment, might be worth a look.

Great information so thank you.

I had forgotten about bore score. Thank you for the recommendations; I will have a look at their respective websites today.

In terms of warranty, Paragons is better as all their cars come with 1yr parts & labour included and at a cost, can be extended by upto 2 years. With 911 Virgin, I believe you pay £500 extra which covers engine etc for 1 yr, but this is not extendable.

I know there are other specialists such as RSJ, but I have first hand experience of Paragon & 911Virgin, so I can recommend them.

Good luck.

there is a high mileage 997.2 C2S Manual black for sale about £25k.

It's high mileage and been for sale about 6 weeks so suspect it might be well used, but if it's mechanically sound, it looks good value.

Shame as you could have had my mates non S 997.1 for 21 with fsh and recent borescope test by jzm. Its now with classic chrome for about 6k more.

play a long game as there's bargains to be had out there privately.

Good advice, agreed. Especially regarding a Gen 2 C2 - they are a fair chunk cheaper than a C2S but are 99% of the car. It is a buyer's market now, and £30k cash for a private purchase should be possible. Put a wanted ad on 911uk - there are some well kept cars on there.

Not sure if the OP is still looking but there are plenty of good cars out there at the moment.

Going through a similar quandary I just picked up a 4 owner 06, C2S in Black with lots of options for £24K. Collected Saturday and its in for paint and detail already and then going to a specialist straight after for a service so I will probably be in for £30K by the next time I drive it but I will love the enhancements made.

Mine has the later IMS bearing and a receipt for Bore Scope. I also looked at the Gen 2 C2 for the same reasons but the slightly rawer Gen 1 S with lower suspension and larger brakes swung it for me. I am changing the head unit for a car play unit straight away too and the Gen 2 interior is also really out of date now so these factors all came into play.

But your repetitive 2 mile commute will be bad irrespective of the 20k European trips.
Spark plugs coated with rich fuel, catalytic converter never warms up. Oil stays sludgy.

Buy a VW up! for your commute and buy a silly weekend toy for the fun driving. Eg Exige or such.
