Is it possible to add Bluetooth functionality to my standard Becker CDR22 head unit?

I’ve just bought a 2001 996 and love the car, but really need to link my phone, as I’ve not touched a CD in ten years, let along own any!

I also prefer the OEM look and hate those cheap looking Pioneer/Kenwood jobbies with bright multi-colour lights.

I’m based in London, so a recommendation on a place to sort it would be lovely too.

Continental do some retro looking single din units that should be plug and play (as you dont have fibre optic cables!)

Get a Becker Grand Prix 7990 (that's the one with an amber display). Had on in my old 996 - worked great.

They pop up on ebay from time to time.

The Becker range does include head units that have some Bluetooth functionality, but it's just for calls.

If you want music streaming then there's a dongle which replaces the CD multi-changer (if you have one).

I've got a Becker Cascade Pro which is connected to the OEM microphone in the dash, for calls it works very well indeed, but I find the lack of Spotify streaming a frustration.

Yeah I can’t see the point of Bluetooth if you can’t stream music.

Is this the dongle you’re talking about? Do you have any experience with it?

Happy to lose the multi-changer as I’m never going to need a CD again.

That's the sort of thing - I've not used one myself so can't comment on a particular unit.

I'm going to sell my Cascade Pro when the Blaupunkt Bremen DAB (finally!) arrives.

Not easy to add bluetooth stream music to a Becker, as they does not come with Aux in ports, although it seems to be some 3rd parties solutions on the market. Check this with some competent car audio specialist.

For a period correct radio I would suggest Blaupunkt, specially the RDM/RCM 126/128 models, as they have Aux In pinouts where you can connect a £50 external bluetooth device from Ampire or JL Audio, very easy to setup.

You can find very decent Blaupunkts units on eBay, about £90-100, they are solid and well done, just be aware with missing pixels in the lcd screen that is a common issue in that generation.

You can also consider the aforementioned Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB. Not cheap, but seems to incorporate all the modern audio paraphernalia including bluetooth audio and phone in a classic enclosure.
