Have been away for a while.

Noticing prices for the 911 are fairly strong at the moment, compared to where they were a while ago.

Example, when I bought my last Porsche around 3 or 4 years ago, it cost me less than current prices.

What seems to be a sensible buy in today's market? Ideally I want a turbo. PDK 997.2 probably the first choice.

Apologies for a financial post, first one back...but need some help to get my head around the market before I decide what I should go for.

I am also considering the option of a regular 997.2 PDK or 996 GT3.

The market is actually quite soft at the moment and if you had come back 12 months ago instead of now your eyes would have been watering

There’s been quite a bit of price correction in the last 6-12 months so apart from a winter bargain I think the prices of what you are looking at are there or thereabouts for the time being!

Thank you for the reply...
Hopefully prices are now settled and will not continue to tumble!

Looking at 997 PDK prices, we are talking 70k plus.

Seems to make more sense to stretch to the 991 turbo in the early 80s. Any owners on here who have driven / owned both the 997 and 991...what are the real world differences?

997 1.5 Turbo here. To be honest, I'd be just as happy DRIVING the 991 GTS, on normal roads, at normal speeds. BUT... very happy I don't have so much spondoolicks invested in my car.

Purely my opinion but I think longer term a 997 turbo will hold it's value better than a 991. First gen with EPAS, .2 cars being turbo'd and all subsequent 992s being turbo'd will hurt it I suspect.

I'm probably a dying breed but I think that as cars get more technical, assisted and remote, and electric cars make macho performance figures negligible a growing number of enthusiasts will start to favour the 996 and 997 generations for their engagement.

The 991 is a far more refined and modern feeling car. The 997 feels like a classic in comparison; that is perhaps a good or bad thing depending on how you lean.

I think the early 997 Turbo is a pretty overrated car. It is neither a fun weekend car, and a Mondeo is a better gran tourer. However, that's not to say it won't be a great collectors car because of the Turbo badge, and the fact that the mezger engine is renowned. Add a manual into the mix and you will have purists foaming at the mouth over what I feel is probably the most boring sports car available.

The Gen 2 is a better car all round; subtle enhancements to all driving aspects - they look the same but be in no doubt that it is a better car by a margin .The PDK is also way better than the tiptronic, yet devoid of any soul (no blips on downchanges are disappointing).

The Gen 2 also sound a bit better, and when i fitted Cup 2s to the Turbo S it was just a monster with a better geo setup. Back then, it was my daily driver and my commute involved country lanes and the car was suited because you could safely overtaken thanks to its power and was about right for the fun/comfort balance.

However, it was then a revelation to get a 997.1 GT3 which was no more compromised and just so much better in terms of engine and handling that I was actually shocked. I was also almost £20k better off!

For me, the Turbos somewhat trade on their name - the '80s Porsche 911 Turbo is an iconic car. As a result, I think in the future the 997 will hold it's money well but be in doubt you will have a better car in the 991.

For the record, I would rather have a 997.2 C4S over a 997.1 Turbo as it sounds far better and looks gorgeous with the wide arches and lack of wing. I'm tempted by another just to look at.

The 997.2 Turbo is a great car but bettered by the 991. Despite this, the 991 will probably depreciate to the point it will be cheaper than a 997.2 - depends if you want a better car or a future classic.

I would get a £75k GT3 997.1 over a 997 Turbo every day of the week.

Not sure about dying. Seems to be more of your breed born every time a new model comes out wink

Nothing wrong with it.

This is where my mind has ended up for the moment!

You can get a 993 turbo for under 100k now. If you want a turbo that’s not a daily driver, then this probably represents a better buy than a 997 and the 991 turbos remit will be soon taken over by the Taycan i.e. no effort bonkers performance. 2wd Carreras more fun to throw around with the modern stuff. GT products obviously a whole different ball game.

Or a 996 turbo which has the performance, handling and feel is closer to the 997 turbo, but at a fraction of the cost whilst also being more usable than a 993 turbo.
