Lightweight Flywheel fitting to 997.1c2s

I had one fitted to my 997.1 GT3.
It makes rev matching with your heel easier on downshifts, but is bloody noisy on idle when up to temperature.
For a road bias car, i wouldn't bother.
I had to change my crank pulley at the same time too, not sure if thats a GT3 specific thing but worth checking.

997.2GT3 here but some of the same principles may well apply.
My original starting point was to replace the standard LSD with the motorsport item and while they were in there it seems prudent to change the clutch which was at around 45k miles. Some advice I received was that there could be an inherent fault in the 3.8L clutch which the 4.0L one resolved.
Once the work started, I got this message:
“We have now removed the gearbox and clutch and the flywheel is worn on the ring gear and has excessive play and ideally needs replacing. Due to the new clutch being a 4 litre version which has the dampening springs built into the centre plate, a standard centre plate does not have these springs. These springs dampen the clutch when a solid lightweight 4 litre flywheel is used, so we therefor highly recommend changing the flywheel and associated parts to the 4 litre versions. The cost of these parts fitted is £1113.35 + vat.
If a 4 litre flywheel is not fitted with the new clutch and a standard dual mass is fitted instead then we would have to fit a standard clutch to your car. This is because there would be a double dampening effect from both the dual mass flywheel and centre plate”
Some of this may not be relevant in your case but serves to point out the interrelationship between the parts.

I’d have a chat with Ollie at RPM Technik, no need to go with their product, but my guess is they’ve fitted quite a few single mass, lightweight flywheels to the various 996/997/981 based CSR conversions they’ve undertaken.

Don’t forget that no non-GT 996/997 models rolled off the production line with lightweight, single mass flywheels, and the Mezger engine is heavily over engineered compared with the non-GT engines.

This has been discussed a few times for the earlier 996 which has a similar engine. The consensus seems to be that it can increase risk of damage to a standard engine. I don't know exactly why so don't want to regurgitate inaccurate facts here. The Carrera Lightweight car has one and the way the revs dart about sounds awesome but it has a properly built closed deck Hartech engine which is a completely different proposition to a standard engine.
