What would be the 'Fors and Againsts' of buying a non UK supplied RHD GT3 as a long term keeper. I'm intrigued as so many adverts begin with 'uk supplied'......should an imported car be steered clear of?

I bought a Cypriot GT3 and it was great ... but there can be spec differences ...

Back in the day, Japanese market RHD cars had much poorer rust protection and no foglights. I think that cars are essentially identical from market to market these days.

This is a rough guide for a couple of non-UK RHD countries.

All heard on the grapevine, so happy to be corrected...

C98 Cyprus - Possibly don't have the UK standard Thatcham alarm and immobiliser fitted (need to check with your insurance company is that is the case and less rust-proofing than UK cars due to the drier weather.

C18 - Japanese spec -The radio probably won't work as the frequencies as different to the UK

The best one I heard (to be confirmed) is that hot Asian countries (Thailand etc) don't always have a heater matrix fitted (because it never gets cold enough), so anyone importing one from that region is in for a surprise.

My car is a South African model, zero differences from a C16 other than the OBC can't be made to display fuel economy in anything other than litres per 100k.

My first GT3,a 2001 my 996.1 , was a Malaysian car - Absolutely identical to UK including speedo in mph. Although as a 2001 car it was Lapis Blue ( A new colour that year and had the minor updates that all regular 996s had.

That's interesting and unexpected! My US import 987 could show l/100k, US mpg and UK mpg.

Imported mine from Malta, 991.1 Gt3, changed the clock dials as they were in kph, also had to have a tracker fitted, other than that no differences, sold it two months ago and it’s now in Malaysia.

Great car, no issues. So many people where put off by it though and tried to kick me in the nuts, got full asking price in the end, and was a cheap way I felt for an out the box track car that had done plenty of track work.

Just sent a pm as too much to write here. But in summary - no spec issues of any substance to deal with, no warranty or servicing worries, and any long-term financial concerns are groundless on the assumption that the buying price is appropriate. If the spec, mileage (and price) is right for you - go for it and enjoy!
